Whats the best chain lube to use. My bike a Suzuki GSF 650 K9SA came out of the factory with a white grease over the chain which seemed pretty good. What is it and how do I get it?

Castrol chain wax. Only way to go.

I tried most stuff. Recommended to me and I've never looked back.

gp - products super chain lube!. better than the non fling stuff i find because that stuff just collect muck and dirt.

Ive used Castrol chain wax and found it to be crap - all it did was attract grit to it which then ground its way into the chain.

Ive got a lubeman fitted now, i just use engine/gear oil in it, depending what i pick up first in the shed Thumbs Up

Not found that, TBH, well no more than I had done with engine oil - if anything I've found that it's less splattery so I spend less time on chain maintenance as I don't have to degrease the whole surrounding area.

It's lasted me ages as well, so in terms of use it's not exactly what I'd call expensive Smile

I use a scottoiler and any oil that`s nocking around, never liked the chain greases and chain wax, too thick and attract to much grit which then gets ground into the chain

I find Castrol Chain Wax is useless crap stuff, I've got two tins of the stuff you can have for free if you actually like it. Example from Stinkwheel linked for supporting evidance.

I've used all sorts, it generally doesnt matter because its free for me, and i do it every other day so i get no problems.
Dirt and grit is caused by lack of maintainance and do you know who are the worst people for it?
Yes, scott oiler owners, their chains are black, and seize up, its horrid.

The usage of Castrol picked up some grit and ended up wearing a hole in my crankshaft oil seal - annoying.

However I still use the stuff, as it's easier to regularly clean the crap off the chain than degrease the entire left hand side!

If im in a rush, ill use chain lube.

If im cleaning the bike ill use engine oil and a toothbrush.

I disagree.

The only people who own a scottoiler and have a black and siezed up chain are the ones who either don't use it or haven't set it up correctly.

A scottoiler doesn't do anything if you don't actually use it.

well I've cleaned the bike over the weekend, got the chain absolutely sparkly and left it in the garage with just Castrol chain lube on it. If I get back from 4 days away and it's gone rusty etc then I'll agree with you all and bin the rest of the can Very Happy

By the way - has anyone else used Muc Off chain cleaner? I swear it's just WD40 in a fancy can and hideously overpriced?! It smells the same, looks the same, and has about the same effect?!

Tarring us all with the same brush etc. I clean my chain every time I wash my bike. Which is once a week when I'm actually riding it.

And a scottoiler will result in your chain picking up alot less crap, as the oil isn't sticky like spray on lube.

I'm actually face palming, i didnt say "ALL SCOTTOILER OWNERS NEVER CLEAN THEIR CHAINS" did i? In my experience i've had to clean off alot more grit and dirt from bike swing arms, huggers, sprockets, chains, and it was once so bad i actually took off the sprocket cover on the front and scraped all the crap out for him.
I repeat again, I didn't say "ALL SCOTTOILER OWNERS NEVER CLEAN THEIR CHAINS" and if you thought i was implying that then i suggest you dont take what i say so literally.

I use any old oil lying about. Not bike oil anymore, that got too expensive, currently using years old bottle of Halfords car oil. I get the back wheel in the air (no centrestand) and using a squeezy bottle I turn the back wheel and drop oil on the inside run O rings. Sometimes I start the engine up and run the bike in 1st gear to help spread the oil through the chain links using centrifugal force.

I re-oil every few weeks in dry weather and after riding in heavy rain. Basically I keep the O rings looking moist.

I use DID X-ring chains, my current chain has done about 35,000 miles and is still in fine fettle (the front sprocket needs replacing though), I think my bike is particularly kind to chains, as is the mainly motorway mileage I do.

I used scottoilers from the mid 80s till 3 years ago. Still got my last oiler, but couldn't be bothered to fit it to my current bike, may get round to it eventually.
