I think you can do an HPI check with just the VIN number. |

or just be riding a stolen one with your plate on it. Through all the cameras and through red lights etc. ____________________ I once saw a bloke shagging a donkey.... in Saudi arabia. Hi
Not sure there is a real purpose. Sure it might stop someone seeing it to clone it, but then you ride around with it on display anyway for all the cloners to see.
I would probably be more concerned with people wanting the VIN number than the registration plate (fair chance that with the right contacts you could get a copy of the key from the vin number).
All the best

As said it's meant to help stop cloning, no point though as you leave it in car parks uncovered and when you're out riding the thing. ____________________ My Flickr |

Yeah, I mean "no reason".
If I was to clone a bike I'd hit the streets rather than ebay.
Probably someone hid his number plate 40 years ago and everyone followed the same route without questions. |
This is wrong.
If a bike thief gets hold of a bike that they need to clone, of a certain model. They are unlikey to drive around all day looking for said model of bike.
What they will do is search the internet, e-bay etc. for the said model and copy from there.
Another reason. Someone who has a bike that they cannot ride, no insurance/licence etc. If they ride around, the first police car that does a number plate check or ANPR will pull them.
If they search on internet for same model of bike, get reg, check its insured. They can clone plates and as long as they ride sensibly they are unlikely to ever get pulled as the bike will come back insured etc.
As I said before poeple involved in these scams will not likely go out looking in their local area for clonable bikes. For one its a pointless waste of time when you can find them so quickly on the net and yet may not see one of the required model when out and about.
Secoundly, they do not want to use a plate from anywhere where they frequent as if the owner of the real plate spots them this will obviously cause problems. So again internet and someone with same bike, in another part of the country woulld be way to go.
Unless of course they happem to spot the bike they need by chance while traveling on the motorway etc. |

Thing is, it makes sense to find the same make and model on the net as a) it's a lot quicker and easier, and b) you can choose one at the other end of the country. If you looked for one on the streets, then it means that it's going to be more local to you, so more chances of getting rumbled by the real owner.
That said, it's still very unlikely, but if there's 2 bikes on the net, one with it showing and one not, then the cloner will obviously go for the one he can see. That's why I shop mine out.
And yes, if you haven't done anything wrong there's nothing to fear, but, the hassle it can cause if it does happen just isn't worth it.
For example, something similar; I was once arrested for non-payment of about 200 parking fines on a car I'd sold months before. They still put me in a cell when I went down to clear it up, and told me I'd have to stay there till the court hearing the next day. Luckily the duty cop was a good one and eventually let me out after I promised I would turn up at court in the morning.
That was hassle I could have done without, I tell thee. ____________________ A Guide To Powerbands |

On the other hand; I don't really care if someone clones my bike.
20ish years ago police phoned my dad and said
-we've found your stolen car
-no it is not stolen, it is in front of my house
-Are you sure?
-Yes I can actually see it.
-Ok thanks, this one will be razor then.

Don't care if someone clones your bike?
It happened to my friend with his car, he got ticket after ticket after ticket.
Kept having to go to court to insist it wasn't him to varying degrees of success. He had to keep producing allabis for his whereabouts to try and get away with the tickets. Not to mention all the local authority parking tickets that went as far as bailifs to recover monies from him.
After 18 months, several majistrate appearences, people knocking on his door to list his possesions etc. etc. he finally got it sorted and charges written off. |
