I am at what could be said as a cross roads or an early mid life crisis, worse still, I'm turning to an internet forum for help. Laughing

Are there any decent aptitude tests out there, not random ones googled. You can normally read into the question and falsify the results a little. I do have some interests I suppose if I really think hard and have had some ideas in the past but nothing serious or worht giving up a career for. I have far to many responsibilities!

When I was at school our CD teacher was the careers advisor, who the hell can I talk to now?

I have thought about uni, but again no idea what direction. OU would be ideal but the range of courses is a little limited.

After surviving a few rounds of redundancies I decided to leave the company I was working for anyway, and found myself wondering what to do next.

This company was used for helping those made redundant as part of the redundancy package, and was offered to me when I left :-

https://www.rightmanagement.com/home/en

They started off with a few aptitude tests that went quite in depth. Although the full service was expensive, they might have a trimmed down package to just run the tests for you.

have you considered talking to a college? Generally they will have a few people who know about adults in education and ideas etc. My dad had an appointment with one and even though he didnt end up going to the college found it quite useful lol

Try some volunteering - you might find yourself interested in one of the things you do, and can then look for paid work in that field.
Talk to your friends about their jobs, what they do, what they find interesting etc, may find some good ideas.

In all the aptitude tests I've ever done, they've recommended things I really have no interest in (Fire service, really?!). I figured I was probably not answering the questions honestly - more answering them towards what I thought I should be like, not what I was like...

What interests you? What is your passion? What are you good at? What is your current/last job? Did you like it? If you didn't, what was it about it - the work, the people, or the system? Can you change any of those things in a different job in the same field?

Are you sure you need a change in career, perhaps it's something else in your life that is making you feel unhappy?

I've found that I'm most satisfied in a job when I'm helping people, and my colleagues are smart, friendly and flexible. Then, work stops being a chore to dread, and a new and interesting challenge to look forward to. I spent a few years in dull office jobs, which didn't challenge me, now I work in a mental health service, meeting new and interesting people and talking to them about what they want to do in life.

What would challenge you? Sometimes you have to go outside your comfort zone and just leap into the unknown, even if it scares the hell out of you. No risk, no reward.

The Jung-Myers-Briggs typology test is the only one I've done of that type that I felt actually made any relevant and accurate conclusions.

In fact, I found it disturbingly accurate.

It doesn't tell you "You would be ideally suited as a shelf stacker in Tesco.". It tells you how people of your type approach problems, tasks and social interaction which can point you towards one or another type of job.

I just took this test and it has nailed me completely. I find it interesting how the best career path it picked for me is the one I have chosen so far.

So look it up with regard to what that profile means.

Various sites have a different take. I found this one quite good

The Mastermind (INTJ) is very focused as well, but more on an internal vision. They are good at solving problems and like to work on tough intellectual puzzles. They are often led into technical positions such as scientific researcher, design engineer, environmental planner.

The developing field of genetics benefits from their intensity as does the field of medicine.

In education they are most often found at the college and university level. In the professions, they may be a lawyer, a business analyst, or strategic planner. Some have a strong artistic/creative bent and may become an artist, inventor, or designer. Whatever they do, they do it with intensity. Says Kim, "I am constantly teaching myself something new in order to solve the problems that I encounter. My husband leaves me alone when he sees that I am caught in what he calls my "Thinking Time." I'm unwinding knots even in my sleep."

Mine came up as INTP "architect" on four seperate tests (which is the most extreme form of rational), all answered as honestly as could and frankly, their description had me off to a tee.

The one thing that has always had some sort of interest in me is design and innovation, its applications and development.

Apart from technology at GCSE I opted to go down the science route and in a right long way round found myself being a nurse. I have absolutely no idea at what this can or could be in the real world as in job prospects

I tried it earlier and was down as INTJ too, neither of those sites suggested i'd be a truck driver so they fail. Although maybe they win because I don't actually want to be one.

They did put me down as a computer programmer, scientific researcher, lawyer, medicine, designer and some other stuff, all of which are directions I would consider myself capable of doing and have gone for at some point except lawyer (did computer design a lot when I was younger, chemistry at uni, was going to be a paramedic and may still and did graphic design (not CAD) when I was younger and was pretty good at it. So it seems pretty accurate really, I've still got no idea what I actually want to do though, never have and probably never will.

Hi

From when these tests were discussed last time:-

https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=179022

I came out as an ISTP

Introverted 44
Sensing 12
Thinking 50
Perceiving 33

which is probably fairly accurate.

Do remember doing a similar test at school many years ago that was similarly fairly accurate, but aimed at the kinds of jobs that would interest you.

All the best

Keith

My result was

INTJ
Introverted 83
Intuitive 75
Thinking 88
Judging 78

Which, after reading the interpretations of that is disturbingly accurate. Seems that my career plan is on the right track, even if my current role doesn't quite fit!
