With the airports clamping down, we're set to see the clash of the titans... child porn vs terrorists, both are used to create fear and suspicion, but they're going to have to decide which is most important.
But, other terrorist ideas that I think would work...
Steal a full petrol tanker and crash it into somewhere with lots of pedestrians.
Bombs on trains has been done, but the actual stations could be targets where lots more people would be injured. Or even a train as it pulls into a station next to a platform full of rush hour commuters.
Football matches as there's very larges amounts of people in a relatively small area, plus there are TV cameras already on the scene.
Nuclear power stations, Sellafield said that Nick Griffin couldn't visit due to concerns over security. Seeing as the BBC managed having him on question time, Sellafield can't be very secure.
The water supplies, contaminate those and it would affect very large numbers of people.
Food supplies, target the big distribution centres for the big supermarkets and suddenly there wouldn't be any food on the shelves. Tesoc are helpful enough to show theirs on a map on their website.
Oil refineries and oil terminals, lorry drivers have already shown us how blockades can cause widespread disruption, attack those and it would cause much longer lasting disruption that the blockades did.
I'd go for a combination of water supplies and food distribution centres as nationwide chaos would ensue.
It's a shame that BCF is ranked so well on Google, governbent security services are probably reading this thread and deciding who is a terrorist. |

Nothing is stopping them other than the fact that all this terrorism malarky is overstated in a manner in which to gain control over you.
The IRA proved this in their campaigns, ie you can buy a couple of machine guns, go to a pub and spray the inside with bullets.
In that it makes no sense if there is a real terrorist threat, since this would cause mass terror and massive casulties.
Look at the school shootings in the USA, where one or two people with a couple of hand guns manage to kill loads of people. They get stopped because they have SWAT teams and armed police to fight back, but even this does not work, the North Hollywood police shoot out lasted hours where two blokes with Ak47s took on the cops
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Hollywood_shootout
The UK doesn't havw SWAT teams and or heavily armed police officers who can go to the nearest gun shop to borrow assault rifles. ____________________ Spain 2008France 2007Big one 2009 We all die. These targets kill a few people and its very sad for those concerned etc etc but the cause no real damage.
My targets would be large arterial road bridges. Taking out a good couple of the main interchanges on the M25 would cripple transport to london. Apart from gridlocking the M25 immediately, bridges cannot be instantaneously repaired so the cost to the nation of clearing and rebuilding would be great. Greater still would be the knock on costs involved with london transport being off. Deliveries would not be made on time etc and with modern JIT processes that is a major problem. Chaos would quickly ensue.
For max effect I would combine this with an assualt on the national grid. Shaped charges on the legs of pylons would bring them down and strategic destruction of super-grid lines would leave the smaller voltage lines overloaded at best. Worst case scenario would be power station turbine destruction/damage from an instant no-loading.
I would do this around harvest time when the crops were dry and ready to be harvested. I'd send out teams of white vans loaded with petrol bombs up and down the country to firebomb and torch fields of crops ready for harvest. Firemen would respond but on a massive scale would be overwhelmed and masses of food lost. With modern imports and such it would not be a crippling blow in itself but would definately dig the hole a bit deeper.
For max effect time it for the summer of 2012 just to keep people happy.
Give me funds, 200-300 bods and watch the country bleed...... |
You (naively) assume the following:
That you and your terrorist crew have access to sufficient quantities of high explosives to take down a large structure like a bridge. We're not talking a few kilo's of home made explosive that you can make from household items and that might kill a few dozen people, this is industrial grade shit. On this account, you will likely fail. Or you will be rumbled trying.
The national grid will have a contingency plan that pretty much covers exactly what you describe. Sure it might be uncomfortable for people for a while, and sections of the country might have to put up with blackouts while they even out the load, but it's not going to bring the country to it's knees. Pylons are pretty easy to put up, that's why they're the preferred method of electricity distribution.
Assembling a crew of 300 like minded individuals for your co-ordinated petrol bomb spree would be a feat in itself. You would likely draw attention to your plans before you could even put them into place. In the unlikely event that you managed to recruit that many people without any of them 1) grassing you up 2) turning out to be working undercover or supplying info to the police 3) blabbing about the plan and getting it rumbled 4) fucking up the plan and getting caught, it would need an almost impossible level of synchronisation. What kind of crops do you plan to burn anyway? Plants are like 80% water. It's hardly going to be a forest fire. You might manage to burn a bit of dry wheat, causing at most a few hundred tonnes of losses. Hardly going to cripple our food supplies.
The fact is that terrorist attacks in this country will never be the large coordinated operations that you fantasise about. They are small cells of disgruntled people will no specialist skills or equipment. Their main aim is fear, rather than effect of the attack. |

Al Quieda blow up the top deck of a London bus and kill themselves in the process.
The IRA did this to a hotel in which the entire cabinet was staying. Killed and injured several MPs, nearly had the prime minister. Entirely failed to blow themselves up.

As I've said before, I remember having to check underneath Air Cadet mini-buses with mirrors for bombs but there was nowhere near as much hysteria about it.
The IRA were FAR more effective and sucessfull as a terrorist organisation. It is just at that time the people and government of Britain were of the attitude that they weren't going to allow terrorism to stop them going about their normal lives. That would mean the terrorists have achieved their aims ie. to cause fear and disruption.
The Arab terrorists got lucky once with the 11/9 thing. They had no idea they'd do so much damage and certainly didn't expect to take the towers down (even the people who built the towers didn't expect that to have happened, they were designed to withstand an aircraft strike).
It's all very amateurish and poorly organised. Most of the bombs they are using are either pressure or incendiary devices. Not high explosives. That's why they land up setting themselves on fire and getting their heads kicked-in by irate Glaswegians. IRA bombs were high explosive blast and shrapnel devices with remote/programmed/timed detonation. If they went off, they did massive amounts of damage.
That said, if you want to cause real terror. Sit on top of a high building and see how many people you can take out on a major shopping street with a long rifle before the police get to you. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. I agree with pretty much all of that. I have no idea how much explosive you need to take down a bridge but I imagine its a large amount of demo explosive that would need to be expertly applied to direct the blast into a structural weak point.
When you say hardly gonna start a forest fire, its quite easy. If a fag out of a car can start one (in hot dry countries) then surely a few petrol bombs will. Hell thats an idea of itself, in the middle of a hot dry summer start numerous forest/brush fires about the place. Not sure what it would accomplish apart from destroying some beautiful scenery but hell what does blowing up a bus do?
I still ride buses, I still ride trains, I'll happily catch a flight if I need to.... |
