In my experience, it can really difficult to get people to change browsers.
I put all of the work computers on firefox, deleted the IE icons and shortcuts and someone was STILL using IE.
I had to uninstall it altogether in the end.
Not as much of a fight as I had with my Dad though. Having spent several hours removing a virus from his PC, I put mozilla on. He promptly had a tantrum and refused to use it becaue he "Wasn't going to start learning how to use a new program now he had the hang of this one.".
I eventually put a shortcut to firefox on his desktop using the IE icon and named it "Internet Explorer", migrated his settings across and uninstalled IE. He'd been using it for more than a week before he twigged. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. I have to take my hat off to my dad, whom I suggested to completely ditch Windows and switch to Linux, 100%. He's 56 and 'average' in terms of his ability at using computers, so we decided to trial things at first, on the premise that Windows was always there to go back to in case something didn't work out. He was also, at the time, in the middle of writing a book in Word ( ) and he spent ages converting it over to OpenOffice, meticulously sorting out image positions etc. He's also been very patient and taken the time to completely unlearn Windows and relearn how to do his day to day stuff with a completely open mind. A year and a half later, he's still Windows free.
For him it's now perfect, as he himself said, "No more defragmenting, viruses or other nasty crap and my pc is a lot faster now, I can just get on with my work". He's just your average desktop user, doesn't play high end games or do anything fancy, apart from a couple of scientific apps that have to run in Windows (so we use a virtual machine for that, because they won't run under Wine, and he finds that easy enough). For everything else, there's an equivalent application on Linux for him, and he's really benefited from the change. So have I, too, as after setting it all up for him, I rarely ever need to provide support or fix things.
My mum on the other hand... complains about how slow her machine is, but is completely unwilling to even hear of or look at anything that isn't Windows, let alone try it, as it's "what she knows, and doesn't want to change", but from what she does on the PC, she could easily switch. Oh well, her choice.
My sister used Linux for a while, got on well with it, but then she bought a MacBook as she had money to burn, and she's happy with that.
BTW, I realise that switching to an alternative OS is definitely not an option for everyone - I'm just telling the story of my experience of a few different kinds of computer user. ____________________ CBT February 2008 | A2 June 2008 | Yamaha YBR125 (written off) | Honda CBF125 (current) |
