Posted: 19:29 - 20 Jan 2010 Post subject: Advice with choosing 'big' bike. |
 |
|
I'm hoping to get atleast £800 for my 125, and i'd like to step up to a bike which will last me many years to come, so i need to make the right choice first time. I'm going to put my bike up for sale once i pass my theory and mod 1, which will be in 3 weeks (hopefully). Then i'll be booking my mod 2 a week or so after (if i don't fail, fingers crossed).
I'll have up to £1000 to spend.
I'm looking for a 600.
I want something reliable for the money, which looks good to, not that bothered about speed.
Current bikes that are appealing, Bandit, CBR and ZXR.
Any beginner advice for which bike to go for, and any buying tips are highly welcome
Thanks in advance |

All the usual really: Hornet, Bandit, SV, CBR, ZX6R, etc.
But I would say don't sell until you've passed everything ____________________ Bikes : 2006 CBR125R - 2004 Monster 620ie - 2004 ZX-6R B1H - 2005 Monster S2R 800 - 2011 Street Triple - 2009 Streetfighter 1098 - 2014 ZX-6R 636

I'd only regret getting a 500 27cows, within a year i'd be itching to get a 600, so i'd rather go for something like a Bandit for starters. I know the power is going to be astounding compared to my 125, but hopefully i'll get used to it
I'm going to take your advice rac3r, and wait until i pass my test before i put the bike up for sale so thanks mate.
Any ideas where the best place is to advertise your bike? I'm thinking eBay as a Classified Ad? Yet i'm a little worried my bike won't sell, because it's Hyosung really, i think people would want to stay clear, even though it's been well looked after. My insurance policy, which i renewed a week ago, had my bikes value at £1000, so i guess it's worth £800, but i'm going to list it at £900 but with Best Offers, that's if i use eBay.
Thanks for the swift replies |

Get the newest, tidiest CBR600 you can find.
Very new rider friendly, very reliable, better handling than something like the bandit, and faster. Only downside is fairings in case you bin it, but you'll probably not get anything mint for £1k anyway. |
I know that i won't get anything mint, everything i've seen for 1k is 1998 or less. My mate got a CBR 600 F, it was a red and black one, he got it for £1100 i think? but it's been great, until he binned it, which, like you said, has been a bit costly, he ended up getting some cheap fairing, and i mean cheap, it doesn't even fit properly.
Great bike though, i have to say, he has the 33bhp restrictor kit in it, and he hit 125mph easy, i was well shocked
CBR is a good choice, just have to look around. |

Hornet or CBR Steelie from me. Both excellent bikes. The Alloy framed CBR is probably slightly better than the steelie, but I think you'll struggle to get one for 1k. ____________________ My Flickr |

If you can, aim for a 600, the people I know with a 500 sometimes which it was a bit bigger after a while.
The bikes named above are all very good choices, but make sure you take into account how heavy the bike is to how strong you are and also riding position, things like that |

Search for Hyosung in ebay, then look on the right side of the screen for the option "ended listings", this will give you a recent list every Hyosung sold and how much they made.
You could try Pistonheads.co.uk as well. It's very busy and I think it's free. |

Thanks mate, i just checked, a 2003 model XRX went for £600, which is 4 years older than mine, so i'm sure i could get £900 for my bike with a bit of luck
I agree with you ClaireBear88, when i sat on my mates CBR, it was so different weight wise, i was scared of dropping it! I suit the CBR/Bandit size bikes, because i'm 6ft, and just feel to uncomfortable on smaller bikes. |

The CBRF is quite a good choice. So are pretty much any other bike that has been posted in this thread.
If I'm being honest, I would recommend the GPZ500 especially if you're going to restrict it. I actually really want one. Well, either that or a CB500. You have to factor in the price of maintenance, tyres etc for big bikes.
Also, you're more likely to get a bike that has been looked after rather than a £1k 600 that has probably had the shit ragged out of it.
I highly doubt the CBRF will do 125mph restricted to 33bhp. It sounds like he's either trying to sell you it or just trying to make himself look cool. My claimed 99bhp ZZR slows down a lot once it hits 120mph. I think the highest I have done indicated was around 135 and it's a bit of a mission to get it there from 120. Aren't RS125s around 33bhp but they only do like 90?
I'd expect around 100 from a restricted bike.
Also, don't buy anything until you have passed your test. So many people I know have either bought cars or bikes and had them sitting for months and months not doing anything just depreciating and taking up space.
TBH, my advice would be forget what bike you're going to get or whatever and just concentrate on the test. Think about bikes once you have passed. You have plenty of time to think it over so no rush.
also my opinion is that if you get a 600 sports then don't restrict it. Otherwise you'd probably just be as well with a gpz or something. |

I think the best place to sell is ebay, both of mine sold in less than a week. You say it's worth £900 but what I would do is put a BIN of £1000 and then a lower reserve in case it goes to bidding. Also just do it as a normal ad it doesn't need to be a classified, oh and take some good pics it makes a big difference!

I think everything there was good, solid advice, thanks mate
I was a bit skeptical when my mate told me he hit 125mph, he probably thought he had it restricted to 33bhp, but didn't. I know for a fact he got it with a restrictor kit fitted, but like you said, since it's a 600 sports bike, i guess he didn't want it in and took it out.
Its just so expensive getting a restrictor kit, all they seem to be these days are a set of washers. It's legal requirements though, and i can't afford any trouble, so it's best to be safe than sorry. Although i've heard many ride without a 33bhp kit, and get away with it i read the thread on here ages ago to, about the restriction certrificates being pointless. What are the chances of getting caught without a 33bhp kit? If you got pulled, can you just say you've got one fitted?
Also, rac3r, i'm going to do exactly what you just said, i'll put it up for £1000 Buy It Now and then a starting bid from £700 or something. I look after my bike big time, pretty obsessed with keeping it well maintained actually so pictures won't be a problem
If Hyosung were more popular, they'd easily be selling well, because they're such reliable bikes.
Thanks for the help guys, i really appreciate it

Starting bid needs to be low to get the ball rolling, say £100? And the reserve would be the minimum you want to let it go for ____________________ Bikes : 2006 CBR125R - 2004 Monster 620ie - 2004 ZX-6R B1H - 2005 Monster S2R 800 - 2011 Street Triple - 2009 Streetfighter 1098 - 2014 ZX-6R 636

CBR600 all the way.
Or a ZZR600.
Both cracking bikes IMO. ____________________ "Let's face it, this is not the worst thing you've caught me doing."
