Advice with choosing 'big' bike.

I'm hoping to get atleast £800 for my 125, and i'd like to step up to a bike which will last me many years to come, so i need to make the right choice first time. I'm going to put my bike up for sale once i pass my theory and mod 1, which will be in 3 weeks (hopefully). Then i'll be booking my mod 2 a week or so after (if i don't fail, fingers crossed).

I'll have up to £1000 to spend.
I'm looking for a 600.
I want something reliable for the money, which looks good to, not that bothered about speed.
Current bikes that are appealing, Bandit, CBR and ZXR.

Any beginner advice for which bike to go for, and any buying tips are highly welcome

I'd be more inclined to get a GS500 or ER5 myself, if I was going from a 125.

But if you're determined to get a 600 - in your price range, it has to be a Bandit. Great all rounder.

All the usual really: Hornet, Bandit, SV, CBR, ZX6R, etc.

But I would say don't sell until you've passed everything

I would go for the SV but for it's girly reputation.

Get the newest, tidiest CBR600 you can find.

Very new rider friendly, very reliable, better handling than something like the bandit, and faster. Only downside is fairings in case you bin it, but you'll probably not get anything mint for £1k anyway.

I'd only regret getting a 500 27cows, within a year i'd be itching to get a 600, so i'd rather go for something like a Bandit for starters. I know the power is going to be astounding compared to my 125, but hopefully i'll get used to it

I'm going to take your advice rac3r, and wait until i pass my test before i put the bike up for sale so thanks mate.

Any ideas where the best place is to advertise your bike? I'm thinking eBay as a Classified Ad? Yet i'm a little worried my bike won't sell, because it's Hyosung really, i think people would want to stay clear, even though it's been well looked after. My insurance policy, which i renewed a week ago, had my bikes value at £1000, so i guess it's worth £800, but i'm going to list it at £900 but with Best Offers, that's if i use eBay.

Hornet or CBR Steelie from me. Both excellent bikes. The Alloy framed CBR is probably slightly better than the steelie, but I think you'll struggle to get one for 1k.

For 1k it's a late 90's zx6 or mid to late cbr 600. Both cracking bikes.

If you can, aim for a 600, the people I know with a 500 sometimes which it was a bit bigger after a while.
The bikes named above are all very good choices, but make sure you take into account how heavy the bike is to how strong you are and also riding position, things like that

I think the best place to sell is ebay, both of mine sold in less than a week. You say it's worth £900 but what I would do is put a BIN of £1000 and then a lower reserve in case it goes to bidding. Also just do it as a normal ad it doesn't need to be a classified, oh and take some good pics it makes a big difference!

Don't buy a Bandit 600, they are not only glacially slow but also heavy and poor handling with disgusting build quality. Get a decent older sports bike (CBR / ZX6 etc), the extra power and handling will stop you getting bored and they are practical transport too.
