 |
|
I have the choice of doing 140round trip a week on a RXS100 or 200 miles on the motorway in the car. Both journeys take roughly the same time on a Friday afternoon. This is because between me and my girlfriend we own a RXS100 and a 1.1 106.
I live away on placement at the moment and 3 out of 4 weekends I travel to see her (Load of my friends are there so no point her coming to where I live as theres not much to do).
Anyway, have been using the car to do the trip but trying to save every penny at the moment for summer and know the bike would be much cheaper.
Car - 200 Miles - Mainly Motorway (A420 and M4 Route on Map)
Nice and warm but costs £20 there and back
Bike - 150 Miles - Mainly A and B roads, no motorway (A429 Route on Map)
Costs about £8 round trip and is so much more fun. Lovely route and great fun filter past everything on a Friday evening. The problems is the lights are dire (trying to sort) and worried about the cold. Normally I get on with it but know all I will be thinking about is the car I could be in.
So, what would you do? Going there this weekend in the car but could take the bike back.
Love to hear your thoughts  ____________________ 99 RS125 --> 02 SV650s --> 03 Speed Four --> 92 RXS100 --> 93 CB400sf --> 01 CB600f Hornet |

+1 for just mixing and matching as it suits you; £30odd quid in petrol saved every month isn't going to make the world of difference anyway, and if the money is in your wallet instead you will only spend it on something else like a magazine or a Burger King. Well, you might be better at saving than me, that's what I do. ____________________ Journalist, student, egotist.

Since you don't do the round trip in one go, the real comparison is 75 miles on a bike or 100 miles in a car - either way is going to be about 2 hours travelling, which ain't exactly a hardship. Your costings come out at roughly 95mpg for the bike and 50mpg for the car - how accurate are they, and does it include 2 stroke for the bike? If so, then the saving's going to be more like £50 a month, or £250 by summer.
I'd use the bike, and if it's cold take a break after an hour for a cuppa somewhere. ____________________ Chances are quite high you are not in my Monkeysphere, and I don't care about you. Don't take it personally.

It's a weekend "nobbing the girlfriend" visit, how much stuff do you need to take? Change of undies and a toothbrush ____________________ Chances are quite high you are not in my Monkeysphere, and I don't care about you. Don't take it personally.

are you feeling ok cows? Are you taking your meds again?
I voted bike. I travel that kind of distance (70 miles to London and then back) every 2 weeks or every month and love it on the CG125. It's just so much fun! I go insane with boredom when I'm in a car that does the same journey. ____________________ will never give up his CG. I look at my fuel gauge more as a progress bar than a fuel gauge.

ms51ves3: why does it need 500 miles? Are you teaching it how to be a piston? |

Depends on the weather lol (how fair-weathered am I!!)
but seriously even though its great on a bike, I wouldnt say no to a car when you have had a long week on placement, its p!ssing down with rain plus all the things you have to take home with you would make a bike journey less enjoyable I think.
Or take it in turns lol |

Drive the car! To the local scrapyard
I frequently do 140+ miles daily on my RXS. All weathers. And I'm a soft southern shandy drinking poof, so once a week shouldn't be any bother whatsoever and it's much more fun than trundling along in a tin box
Why not go the motorway route for extra fun? ____________________ The RXS100: vehicle of choice for Chuck Norris |

I'd choose the car over an RXS100. If you had a decent bike (for that distance), I'd choose the bike. I'd always choose my current steed (heated grips, great wing protection, muffs) over any car. |

The headlight thing might be a serious issue depending on what sort of roads you're on. On an entirely unlit single track road in the countryside my XT is frankly terrifying as you can barely see where the road goes ____________________ ZX6R + CBR600RR |
