Currently got a geared 2T 50, and im looking to do my A2 and move onto real bikes Razz (Ok, its 6 months away, but i gotta start thinking of bikes now!)

Been looking at the ZXR400, as it looks nice, will have some nice competition in the shape of an RVF, and can be had for around £1,000. Seem to be pretty reliable, quite low (I've got a 30" Leg) and handle well.

I've ridden an RS125 through its powerband (alright, it was 1st, but still) and nearly cacked myself the 1st time, but got used to it quickly, so how harsh with the ZXR be compared to something like an RS125? Im thinking it will be smoother as its not a 2T, could be wrong.

Just any idea's to toss in would be great, MPG etc. as it will be a commute bike too.

Cheers.

Chances are the RS125 was restricted to 14.6bhp. The ZXR is 65bhp, but obviously you'd be getting it restricted Wink

The sports 400's are all getting a bit old an unreliable now as most are 15-20 years old. Whilst they would make a decent choice i wouldn't rule out something newer, potentially cheaper, easier to ride and more reliable like a CB500. Just something to think about.

Not wrong. My VFR broke down due to old age. My friends RVF is currently having a new gearbox, his ZXR cam chain tensioner broke causing massive damage.

They are all well designed bikes, but they were designed as sports bikes to go as fast as possible. They were not designed to last 20 years of being abused by teenagers. Good ones are getting harder to find and more expensive too.

Wouldn't describe them as "bullet proof" when they've been hammered for the best part of 10 years, usually by young uneducated/uncaring owners.

Most 400s these days will have issues or quirks by now.

you are wrong,

My zxr400 has handled getting its head kicked it very well. Just got it back from the workshop though after getting the Head Gaskett done and some other work too.

The HG does go every 10k miles or so.

ZXR400 is my 1st "proper bike" and i do love it, even if i am a bit lanky for it. I'm 5 11 and even though i fit quite well, anything oer 100 miles and i need to take a break to stretch my legs.

as a 1st bike i would suggest it if you are shorter than me, and if you get a cheap one thats just had a HG replacment.

If not, get a CBR600F or a ZX6R both like getting restricted.
And yes, get the restricotrs put in what ever bike you get. Otherwise you might aswell be riding without insurance......

Peace out,

Stay Lucky

if it states in your insurance policy that you have a restricted licence and a restricted bike and you fail to put the restrictors put in than you insurance is invalid if you have an accident.

im more than happy to be proved wrong, but i cant be arsed looking for the info.

Peace out

Cheers for the input. It was a derestricted Extrema 2000 model i rode, so around 33bhp.

Interesting to hear any input Smile

I think you'll find that the insurance company is still legally obliged to pay out for the third party. They can then pursue you for any costs incurred if they so choose.

Not quite the same as riding with no insurance at all. Wink

There are many people who have forked out for new reg/recs and new head gaskets that will disagree with you.

400's are generally old knackered and have been ragged about by kids. They sit on knackered 20 year old suspention which waves any handling advantage they may have once had. Buy a hornet or similar naked six it will be more reliable easier to get parts for and quicker.

I got my bike back from the garage last month after getting a HG replaced.
Yeah my rear shock is a bit knackered and i do need to get it overhauled.

If you have the money to get a decent one that doesnt need to much work then go for it.
VisorDown rated them the best 400cc bike this month. 2 of my mates got there bikes in the mag n all.

I know I read that as well, I laughed how it rated it as really reliable with the headgasket issue which isn't exactly a little problem.

Do you know what the actual problem is? shitty headgasket or poor head/block design?

I do like the looks of the ZXR but for the money you would pay for a decent one I would rather get a newer 6.

I went from a 50cc to a 400cc CBR, i was lucky enough to get one thats in pretty good nick (its a 1989)
You adjust in a couple of days to the bike, obviously you have to spend a bit more time getting used to gear changes and the jumpiness of a bigger bike but i would definately go for a 400.

The head is made from alloy/ally
the gasket is made from ally/alloy too

gets to hot and pop. usually last about 10k i think.

mine hadnt popped, it was blowing slightly. which was licky as the head hadnt warped.
