Performance Bikes Magazine.

I have a giant Tescos near me with a full isle of magazines including some complete odd ball ones. However I've never seen PB in there. Are they always sold out or do Tesco not stock PB? Or has it finished?

PB still exists. It is in my college shop all the time and most other big newsagents.

Might give it a whirl then. In the late 80's and early 90's it was unsurpassed. Also used to do openly illegal stuff like the Phil McAllen issue where him and Mark Forsythe had a full blown superbike race on the public road on tuned fireblades, and openly had it as the tagline on the cover of the magazine.

Loved it back in the day with Hargreaves,Forsyth,John Robinson,Kev Smith etc,as Silky said,it went downhill shortly after.

Don't know about Tesco, but I generally find it one of the three most frequently available mags, along with Bike and FB.

I never read it through it's former glory, or it's apparent decline, but I picked up a copy for the first time a couple of years ago and have since read it regularly (and read through a friends back issues through to 2006). It's more sports focused than Bike (for instance), but also much better presented, conceived, written and edited than Fast Bikes. It's mature, informative and entertaining. My favorite UK publication by some way.

Another vote for it being great in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and then going down hill in the mid 1990s (seemed to get proud of how many bikes they managed to write off each issue). Well worth getting these days though.

Well.. Just got back from a nice hot bath, and the latest copy of Performance Bikes.
To answer those that 'loved it in the 80's/90's and wouldnt buy it now':
This month covered the following:
1) Review of what at first sight is a slightly feminine v twin ... but deemed by the test riders as a secret weapon (cue photo of him squirrelling it out of a corner with front in air).
2) Many many specials .... each test rider has a long term road bike and a special on the go in the garage.
(rg500 engined mito / restored kr1s / subtly but properly tweaked original r1/blade / ect etc etc)
3) Proper reviews written by the test riders / contributors ... Speed triples / tuonos being hoinked out of corners .. rear wheel slides etc.
4) good reviews of latest kit.
5) Look at why Rossi etc hang their legs out ... amusingly titled "What connects Rossi with Heather Mills-- a detached leg"
6) Monthly articles such as "Bikes that changed my life " + "Bikes we have seen at trackdays that we like" + "lets go nuts in spain ".
The list is endless and all well written ... interesting and often very very funny.
They really have returned to the days of Mark Forsyth and his speckly neon helmets

Around about the time I got my bike I was sitting in Durham train station waiting for my train and decided to buy a mag. The only one WHSmith had in was BIKE.

It's the only magazine I've bought since, so which magazine is better. Should I swap ???

I like previous issues of BIKE where they have done some cool projects and rides. But lately it's become just test rides which is sort of boring because I'm not interested in a new bike I can't afford the one I have.

They seem to have run out of cool things to do but it is winter so i'll let them off.

I personally like buying old issues of Classic Motorcycle Mechanics from shows for £1

All magazines are way overpriced for stuff I can read on the internet or already know.

I agree. Performance bikes is getting much better. I have been reading Superbike mostly for the last few years but its like a giant advertising tool for manufacturers now and not as much fun as it used to be.

I opted for a subscription, cos I couldn't reliably find it in Sainsburys lately. Free gift was a battery charger, which I didn't have, and has been useful to me. I could have spent the £45 on a battery charger, so effectively, I've got a years worth of craptime reading for free!

Haven't read PB in years. I used to like John Robinson, but most of the stuff was just the same old wank all the other glossies churned out. We found the Bimota Tesi's steering a bit weird while doing 140 at Donnington in the wet. Zzzzzz.
