Ok...a brief over view

Killa...me...has been since Jan 1st, on a brand new diet and training schedule.
I said awhile back on here i wanted to shift my beer belly and tone up, so ive focused on it and im doing pretty well....or so i thought.
It consists of the following.
My diet now contains only good stuff for achieving what i mentioned above really.
Fish, chicken, occasional steaks. Eggs, salads, mixed nuts for snacking...you get the idea. No treats, no snacks like choc bars, crisps or cakes...just raw power food and im doing ok with it.

So ive been setting up my routine along the way. Weights, pull up bar, skipping rope (more of that later), basic work outs including situps, pressups, squat thrusts. I don't have the money for a mega gym pass so im doing it old skool style. My cardio so far is jogging and the skipping rope. Now, the skipping rope, so far, im terrible at it. Looks easy but it isn't, but i have improved since i bought it but i guess i just need to press on....ill talk about the jogging in a bit.

You must be thinking reading this that im doing very well and probably looking like a god right now. Well im not, and maybe im at a crucial stage in this routine and need to press on (and stop complaining as its only day 28), so i need some advice.
Ive cut weight and i know ive toned up slightly, but i really dont think im seeing the results i should do.
I jog in the park at the moment and have been slightly improving in distances since i began Jan 1st. I try to get out almost every day. Saturday i went for a run, sunday my right leg was very tense so i decided to have a rest day. Monday i thought yeah jog tonight but it was no good, my leg was aching. Tuesday it felt better, i warmed up to a decent level and went out. Bloody leg again, muscles tensing up badly! I wasn't even tierd.
What is this? Have i messed up previosuly...not warmed up properly and thats why its giving me jip or something else?
Im going to be mixing jogging up with swimming soon to get some variation going on, but i just need to know why my legs packing in first.lol. Maybe its my shoes? Ive got no 'bubble' in my running shoes, they are light weight addids running shoes...and im flat footed. Just some ideas anyway. Needless to say, i dont feel like im built for running.

Finally im actually too worried to do a before and after photo...i scared im not doing something right.lol. I want to be like the adverts 'I GOT RIPPED IN 3 DAYS!!'

Advice welcome. Thumbs Up

I'm certainly no expert but my advice FWIW would be if you are experiencing a tightened muscle in your leg when running, think about a brisk walk instead at this stage.

I think brisk walking is under-rated as an exercise and I know that the 5 miles a day I walk the dog has been instrumental in keeping my fitness levels ok so that when I go running I find it easier.

Perhaps when you get running think about interval training and speeds rather than distance - Fartlek training is rated highly for improving running style and stamina. Also think about your foot placement when running in case you are overly stressing one side of your body. You'd be surprised how well our bodies compensate for weakness and you may find you're favouring one side over the other. Slow it all down and perfect the technique before going for distance.

Good on you!! Thumbs Up

Brisk walking pace ~3.5mph... You kill 90 minutes everyday walking a dog? Sheesh.

Killa, might be worth trying to have a few goes on a treadmill. My back always goes funny when I jog on proper runs, but on a treadmill it's fine. And I'm getting a lot better technique from it.

As for the rapid tone, I've no idea how fat you'd porked yourself too, but theres a lag of about a month (I find) before your skin shrinks to fit sudden weight loss. I was really really suffering in Mozam for food at one point, whilst doing a manual job, and was crashing weight off. My stomach looked far flabbier after that then before. It was only when the food issue was sorted that I started firming up again.

The belly grew back in to the skin lol.

Just something to keep in mind before you get too downhearted.

Oh and best advice I was ever given regarding running, keep your hands REALLY loose. Like pretty much flapping, or at worst very lightly clenched. Clenched fists seem to tire you out quicker.

And to get the ball rolling:

Before:

After (weird pose was to wind up the fat girl sat perving on the dive shop lads Laughing):

(Yes, I was quite the porker at times)

Whoa Bonny!
Fair play man, you look like an extra in a cheap martial arts film. Wicked Cool Thumbs Up

Ok...you'll probably laugh....
Im 5'10 and 11.5 stone. So no, Im not porky really i know...but my belly looks stupid on me! Sad
Toning im doing for looks, the weight shift for the belly.
There's one big problem with my routine, i work Monday to Thursday 8-5 (im home at 6pm) and fridays 8-1pm so it limits my work outs.
Weekends i try and cram in some extras. I guess i need a plan written down??

You're right i think, my jogging technique must be shite or my footwear as its affecting one leg more than the other. Treadmill is what i need but i dont need to be ?40-50 lighter in pocket to take advatage of it. Thanks for the input though Bonny! Thumbs Up

Thanks fella. I wouldn't quite go that far, but it's definitely an improvement.

Really not liking the older pics of me now Sad The before pic was taken in the most shallow place on earth aswell Laughing Didn't get laid that month I assure ya Laughing

As for technique. Can you not just troll the local gyms, say you want to try their gym out. This climate they should let you merrily. Then just sit on the treadmill for a long time. Also good for working out what pace you can keep up for a long time.

As for mental plans, I wouldn't really bother. Just work really hard when you get an hour. If you come out feeling you did well, then you probably did. You can't bullshit yourself.

I know it costs money, but it might be an idea to go see a Chiro/Osteo...you may have done some damage to your leg and it might need to be realigned before you continue with the exercises.

(Or to a physio 'free' c/o your doctor referral)

Remember that running puts a heck of a lot of pressure on your body...so it might just be your body's way of halting you before you do more damage.

You dont say where your leg was tense. Upper leg, lower, front back etc...

When starting you run's, outside or on a treadmill, walk for 5 mins, then jog lightly/walk for another 5 mins changing every 30 secs. If need be have a little stretch then get in to your run proper building up to speed progressively. Also consider having a cold shower after a run. Seems strange but it works to prevent injuries a lot!

As for running, it isnt a natural thing to do as everyody believes. Certainly not to do it well anyway. Might be worth getting gait analysis done. You say your feet are neutral, but stand in front of a mirror and look to see if you ankles roll in or out at all, or you can feel it. If so conciously correct it when walking, standing & running then over time it will become natural.

Try to imagine as though your running on cotton wool and trying not to disturb it with every step as well. You are trying to make your running a lot lighter and put less stress on your muscles and joints. It will also make you faster in the long run.

If you want a vague program then PM me what days/times you have free and I'll knock one up quick.

and @ bonny, do you know theres a bird with her knockers out in the background of your pic. And you didnt get a shag there? Poor show. Laughing

Yeah thanks Reuben...i think my running technique is pretty poor as are my trainers.
I think ill go back into it slowly and after some decent brisk walking. I was really fine for over 2 weeks though so i didnt understand why now my leg decides to do this.
My right leg is the problem, its like dull aching pain all the way up it, particuarly tense on the calf muscle.

If and when i get some time, i could send over time avaliable to me and i would be very grateful for a plan of action. Thumbs Up

If you can give any better description would be good.

Sounds like a small strain though, nothing too serious. Does it prevent walking in any way, a limp etc?

Just let me know what times youre available for your plan. You only need an hour per session (weights or running) to make big improvements, just needs some consistency over a couple of months and training in the right way.

Yep, easily!! Mr. Green

He gets either two walks either end of the day if I'm busy or one long walk if I have the time. I'll do a long walk of 10 miles a couple of times a week. He comes running with me too on his little bungee harness Mr. Green

It's for my benefit as much as for his. I'd rather spend an hour out walking in the fresh air than an hour cooped up in a smelly expensive gym. I get to walk in countryside btw, not urban pavements, but they'd still beat a gym and it's free!!

Did you also notice the sea of saloned, 6 packed idiots on said boat as well?

These were very vapid moronic women, the 6 pack, not intellect and personality, was king. And as you can see, I was pretty husky while out in Kos.

Linky Mr. Green

I have this one but as you can see there are loads of different ones.

He does get a swift tug but the one I get back is 'tuggier' as he's around 40kg!! TBH I use it more for making sure he doesn't run off when there are cars, dogs etc about. He loves the pulling me along bit though and it's great at getting him focussed. I make sure he's had a 'pee and poo' walk first though, so he has no genuine excuse for stopping and believe me I don't run fast!

Were you fitted for your shoes at a proper sports shop or did you just buy them?

A proper sports shop will assess your gait and foot conformation and advise you training shoes which are appropriate to how your feet land and what you do in them. A lot of them use motion capture and electronic stuff to assess you but at a minimum they should feel your feet and ankle joints, inspect how well your legs align and carefully watch you running up and down in bare feet.

Having flat feet doesn't help either, your calves and shins will tend to get pretty tight when you run (I have flat feet too). Well fitting running shoes with a lot of support and well curved toe and heel areas to help you break in and out of your stride would definately help with this.

You might even get a pleasant surprise. My girlfriend went in to one in Carlisle and they came up with the cheapest asic trainers in the shop as being her ideal running shoe.

I read it as calf muscle tightness rather than the sharp front of shin leg pain that is typical of shin splints. I think it sounds more like a strain or at the outside a trapped nerve, but if it's only present or exacerbated by running I'd think a strain of some sort to be the most likely as trapped nerves tend to hurt most of the time regardless of what you're up to!

@Jon, Killa doesnt mentione front and side pains in his lower leg, so I'd say it wasnt shin splints.

@Bonny, I cant see one person with a decent body in there lol. If those girls are that vacuous then they can fuck off too because I can't see a decent body amongst them either lol.

Compared to me at that point oh ginger ninja, they were all gods. Oh the wonder of poor diets.

As for the women, there were one or two hot ones, but certainly nout special. And in the whole month I met TWO worth talking to. TWO.

That truly was hell over there.

Killa, if running ain't for you, what about cycling?

Get yourself a cheap mountainbike and ride!

If you really want to push yourself, stand up and pedal.

Congrats anyway, I can't get off my lazy arse - i blame uni.

I do both and they both have their own redeeming qualities.

Running is really good for using a lot of energy and having a good workout in a short amount of time, I rarely go running longer than 90 mins.

Cycling, especially road cycling is great for sunday mornings or a long afternoon off during the week to explore different parts of the country, enjoy a good slice of toast at a new cafe you find. Once you start being able to conquer 60 miles in one ride it then becomes even more rewarding and you build up a different level of a fitness. Being able to cycle for 4 hours + really takes it out of you at first, but feels oh so good.
