What is it for? It is the latest must have from Apple but does it have a reason to exist? As far as I can see it is just a big ipod touch. No camera, no phone and most important it only opens one ap at a time.
If I a word processing I often have 3 or 4 windows active so I can copy and paste or compare information.
What is it for?

It's apples attempt at combining an electronic reader (like the kindle) with a netbook. I think the idea is minimal operating system, maximum screen size, multi touch, mobile networking. In essence turning the internet into a holdable magazine you can interact with through one of apples simple yet swish GUI's. It's not a bad idea, but there are already a few out there and the apple one doesn't look like a massive leap forwards.

Another opportunity to piss your money up the wall on useless "lifestyle" tat. The apple fanbois will spaff in their panties over it.

There are many, many reasons why I think the iPad has a credible place. The problem is that people are comparing it to a fully functional and open platform multitasking computer with a "normal" operating system. It is not designed to be this, nor does it want to be this.

It is, however, a media device for people that enjoy buying multimedia online and making the most out of it but don't know anything about computers, and this device fits them perfectly. If it came with Mac OS X or Windows 7 on the thing, yes it can now technically do "more", but that would hugely take away from the device and how people would use it. People wouldn't use it how the iPad is going to be used.

I think it's good that only iPhone and specific iPad applications run on it, that means if it does run on there it was designed for it and will be quality. If you need something else then you should buy a netbook and have it solve all of your needs without complaining about a device that was never intended for you.

And I know that I certainly have had many moments where I said to myself; wow, I wish my iPhone could do exactly this but had a much bigger screen. Well now there's a market of people who can buy one and use it as a 10" satnav, a thing to listen to music, watch movies or TV, organise and show others photos, play games and generally use as an "internet" device and organiser with all of the apps on there on the as a mobile device.

In my opinion it's the perfect compromise of being like an iPhone (and why the iphone works so incredibly well being a closed platform) and being like a laptop computer in some of things it does. I bought an iPhone so I could have the internet absolutely anywhere. The iPhone is more convenient than getting out my laptop even if my laptop did have a 3G connection. An iPad however would be better for the web on the go than an iPhone (obviously) and more portable, faster to use, better to use than a laptop. The laptop is for far more serious work.

It's a great gadget and improves upon the many things that the iPhone does where you could use either.

From a purely practical point of view, it is almost totally smooth, too big to carry in one hand and has no handle.

Also they seem to have forgotten what the "U" in USB stands for.

My ?150 netbook is smaller and has more functionality, practicality, memory and flexability.

It might not want to be that, but the price and the size it fucking should be!

I think things will happen along the lines of the original iPhone. They release a device which, while revolutionary, doesn't really have the features its contemporaries do, lure the fanboys in then incrementally add one feature at a time whilst jacking up the price each time they do.

Just a massive iPod Touch... I don't like any of these "slate PCs" or whatever they're calling them today, they're too fragile. Plus the name is just stupid.

Thank you peeps, it confirms what I thought. Great big Ipod Touch with no handle.
Mayby it would be of some use if you could get Win XP as an Ap from Apple?

I would think of it as a device in the same way you think of an iPod, a portable DVD player, a laptop for checking your emails on a train, a nintendo DS / PSP which also functions as an ebook reader and general multifunctional personal organiser. And it's a bloody good device for those things at that.

Not with a backlit LCD screen its not - try reading outdoors with one.

Proper ebook readers are far superior.

Absolutely, and if the ebook reader was the only reason I bought an iPad I'd be thoroughly disappointed. During a commute or plane flight though, I think it would raise the value of what it could do for me considerably if I had it in my possession. I end up reading for hours off of my LCD laptop screen anyway. If I took it easy I'm sure I could read off of an iPad too.

Seems like a good device to me, I like the idea of it just sitting on the coffee table, want to check anything on the net, just touch it and bang, jobs a goodun, at the moment I either have to get the laptop out power it up wait, etc or go and boot up the PC.

When the family come over we can whore out latest pictures and the young'uns can mess about with the app's I've got an iPod so fully aware of the ipad's limitations, it still wouldnt stop me buying one.

I also like buying something thats "the future", can't wait to get my icoffeeTable Very Happy

If I'm sitting at a coffee table and want to check something on the net I just use my phone Confused

Afraid I'm with the "how useless is that?" crowd. Even my now aging X1i handles multiple programs running concurrently.

Laughing This is exactly why the iPad is great. You're at the coffee table, you need to check the internet and instead of using your phone you have a device that does it BETTER. Much. Larger. Screen.

It's not as portable as an iPhone, but how is a 10" screen not better in every way? I really want one.

Thumbs Up @ alexio, I could use my iphone, I could use my laptop or PC, but just leaning over to the coffee table and having everything at your finger tips on a proper screen, it makes me want one.

Its a luxury item, no one NEEDS an ipad or an iphone for that matter, they are just fun and convenient, goodbye laptop, hello future!

I work for Apple and this device is actually going to have some amazing things developed for it. It seems kinda lame at the moment but there will be a hardware revision sometime in the future with a camera and other little things. It's just going to start paving the way for touch screen hand held computers really.
