Riding without MOT and tax

Quick question...

I'm thinking of buying a bike that's currently sorned and has no MOT so can't be taxed. If I book it in for an MOT on the day I pick it up am I alright to ride it the 50 odd miles back to where I live (and where the test centre will be) or is this pushing my luck?

I will insure it for myself when I pick it up but would this be invalid? Or is that not the case with the rule about being booked in at a test centre?

Get the booking in writing and you should be fine. I believe you are supposed to use a direct route so no diversions for a hoon.

IIRC the rules state it must be booked in to a nearby MOT centre, somewhere an 'acceptable' distance from where you are riding it. Not sure if 50 miles is?.... However, if its all prebooked and the test centre have taken your details you should be fine. You'd have to be unlucky to get pulled over, and even if you did the chances are you would be ok if it was just your average Chief Wigham.

i know its illegal..but so is riding without the above?

I suppose I could always carry a gun and shoot any copper that stops me Thinking

That would also allow me to take hostages if need be and perhaps hole up in a petrol station or something. I could then perhaps execute them one by one until my demands are met and I'm pardoned for riding without an MOT. I could then ask for a plane to fly to me mexico where I could get plastic surgery and assume a new identity.

My Z was due its first MOT in December, but because of the snow, it finally got done last week.

All I did is phoned up and got them to put it in their book, I brought all my documents with me.

What I would do, is after your bike gets its MOT, is to leave it at the garagne and to walk to the nearest post office and get it taxed straight away. Then no issues.

... you can then take the fresh MOT down the nearest tax issuing PO and get your tax sorted too Thumbs Up

Just ride it home without tax and MOT, then sort getting the MOT done whenever.

Riding without tax and MOT is no big deal. It's even less of a big deal when you're riding home on a bike that you've just bought.

I've seen claims about lots of ANPR in Reading. I've been in queues behind and infront of a few police cars in my car in the last month.
Just found out my tax has actually run out on 31/12/09, so been driving around untaxed for the last month with no problems.
Wouldn't have done it if I'd realised, as try and be fairly good these days to avoid hassle.

Generally ANPR I've seen tends to be front facing in my experience, though not all of course.

I thought there was also a clause about it being taken to a place of MOT repair, but not sure if that can count as your home Smile

Well, hopefully it won't need any more repairs than what I can do at the roadside when I pick it up. That said, my eye has been diverted by a sexier proposition* altogether in the small ads so maybe the shitter won't be on the menu after all and I'll actually get something else that 27cows doesn't like Wink
