I have pinlock, and still get a silly amount of misting ...

Does anyone else suffer from misting even with pinlock? Thinking

Am I supposed to take the pinlock off every now and then and clean it with say soapy water to get rid of any built up grime/grease?!?! Thinking

I've found that after 6 months of getting a new visor+insert the thing does start to fog up a little but only in excessively cold temperatures and only in the bottom-middle of the visor. Open some air vents and it should go away Wink

Happened on my original cheapo ?90 Lazer helmet, ?300 Shoei Multitec and current ?450 Schuberth C3. I can only assume it happens with every other helmet going...

I get this aswell, a big blob right in front of one of my eyes at the bottom or top normally. More of a problem than normal mist cause you can't wipe it away and it's only in front of one of your eyes, fucking up depth perception.

I find that opening your visor and making sure the pinlock is pushed firmly against the visor top and bottom before setting off helps alot.

But if I've ridden in the morning and leave wet gloves in my helmet (no other space in my locker) it often mists up more on the way home. It's hard to adjust the pins to make it fit better cause I have to take the pinlock out to adjust them and really have no idea whether twisting this way or that makes any difference, it always slips down over time anyway letting moisture in, so best just to squish it against the visor before setting off each time!

You just need to make sure that the seal between the pinlock and your visor is good all the way around, which can be really tricky, but you'll get there in the end - the pins are a funny shape and you can twist them so they push the seal down properly. I've found that removing and washing it every once in a while with soapy water really helps. Just be careful as they scratch really easily - I ruined one as I used the wrong side of a sponge (scouring pad bit) by accident. Embarassed

+1 on the above. Wash it, stick it back in the pins and adjust them round so that the seal is fairly tight and won't move easily, don't over do it though as you can actually mark the inside of your visor eventually.

Some visors seem to seal better than others though, the stock clear visor my arai came with was terrible and never really wanted to seal right whilst my dark tint was almost impossible to mist up (although the pinlock stuck so well it scored the inside of the visor near the top much to my surprise), I recently got one of the new max vision visors which works perfectly though, plus I don't get the top of the pinlock obscuring my sight at times Thumbs Up

My brand new pinlock fitted to a brand new visor by a qualified Arai service person misted up first time out.

And that's misting on the inside of the pinlock, not between the visor and the insert in an Arai condor with all the vents open and the visor in the "cracked open" position. Still landed up riding half the journey home with the visor open.

It was all a bit shite really. I was expecting to be able to ride with my visor closed during the winter for the first time in my life and it didn't happen.

I wont be buying another one when this one is dead, it makes things slightly better but not ?20 worth of better.

I agree, All the hype about pinlock is very overrated. It came with my multitec but was rubbish, i threw it away.

The only working solution is a Fog City Insert, but they only last about a year or so.

It?s weird that Pinlock generates such a stark love / hate contrast.

I definitely fall in the love camp. I spent over ten years commuting with pollution masks to try and minimise fogging. In 2006 I bought a new Shoei XR1000 that came with a free Pinlock insert and it was a complete revelation. That winter my riding was transformed. I could see!

Some peripheral vision is lost as the unprotected bits of visor round the edge of the Pinlock easily mist up, but the main bit of Pinlock stays resolutely clear. The only time it ever fogged up at all was while riding in the recent snow and even then it wasn?t too bad.

I don?t go near it with soapy water. I clean the outside of the visor while it?s on the helmet then pop the visor off to wipe the inside with a damp cloth. I may remove the insert once every six months, especially in the summer to soak off layers of bugs, but otherwise it stays put. I have a clear visor with a clear insert and a dark visor with a clear insert. Both have been 99.9% reliable and have now lasted over three years.

There?s nothing different about the way I breathe. Trust me, I?m a mouth breather with almost bovine levels of hot, wet halitosis, but I can still see where I?m going.

I never have to lift my visor at traffic lights and I?ve become averse to riding with my visor open because it makes my eyes water.

I can?t comment on rival makes because I haven?t tried them, but I bet they're just as effective. I seriously recommend giving them another chance, especially if you ride in cold, wet weather.

Edited for spelling

pinlocks great, never have any problems really. only one i had recently was i took the insert out of my helmet after it being in there for over a year to clean it and it had gotten used to being bent like that for so long that it wouldnt seal again.

bought another insert and its back to being perfect again

in the meantime im bending the old one back the other way to reuse when i need it Smile

my visor rarely fogs up and it's only a standard thing with no inserts or anything. I found that if you push your top lip out past your bottom one and exhale that way so your blowing down, out the helmet it stops it. Seems like a bit of a faf but after a while you dont even realise your doing it, just becomes second nature.

The only time i do have problems it when its really foggy in the countryside and the inside of the visor get's wet aswell Confused

Yep, it is an Arai and like you, even when ajar and vents open it mists like feck Thumbs Down

To be fair I have had exactly the same problems with 'fog city', so I don't think the problem is limited to pin-c-o-ck design ...

I'll whip it off and give it and the visor a wash ... at least you can do that with one of these!! Thumbs Up

But Pinlock is the better of the anti-fog systems isn't it?
There is probably a BCF Poll somewhere.

Biggest problem i have is water droplets/spray staying on the outside of my visor. I've tried lots of sprays. Yes it does clear if i'm doing +50mph and i turn my head abit. I think it was G who said get one of those finger-wipe things.

Soz for busting in your thread Blue_SV650S, but this mist on the outside of my visor is a real problem of late.

Just realised how much of an idiot I am. Took the visor off and had a proper look at the pins, turns out the pointy bits don't have to point any particular direction, and they visor is much tighter if they're pointing outwards... Whereas I'd thought they could only be adjusted within 180 degrees and must stay pointing inwards. Why? No idea.

Anyway now I've pointed them outwards and the visor is very tight, so hopefully should stop moisture getting in...

On the topic of the outside of the visor I just wipe it away with a finger, doesn't have to have a wipey thing and your finger will curve better to the visor without one I think, making it a broader wipe! If it's raining your gloves will be wet anyway so no problems making them more so. Obviously this leaves a bit of residual moisture on the visor but it doesn't tend to bother me too much, I just wipe it occasionally!

I bought a new Pinlock ready visor and Pinlock insert for my AGV Ti-Tech back in October.

It has never misted/fogged up so does the job but when I removed the insert to clean it the other day most of the silicone beading from the top part of the insert had fused to the inside of my visor, the insert simply came away from it.
Give it the visor a clean but left the silicone in place on the visor and put the insert back in - still works a treat but not happy that the silicone beading degraded in the way it has over the last 4 or so months Sad

I had a Fog-City Hyperoptiks on another helmet which was just as good Thumbs Up

Incidently the original flat race visor that comes with the Ti-Tech is also very good at not fogging.

I'd say that is better if you aren't arsed about what it looks like... Could be worth connecting the lid to the base via string so you can drop it by mistake. My Dad loves his.

These do the trick for me, rubber blade on the first finger of the left hand, works great.

That's just a box with a sponge in it. Laughing People pay ?15 for that? Laughing

I'm happy with my free V sponge that I keep under my seat for visor cleaning. Those visor wiper things that Blue posted are very good. I have two, Shame I can't find the fcukers. Sadly neither of those products are good for misting. Best thing for misting is to keep the visor open one click and man up tbh.

But if people are lazy and can't be arsed to make a mounting braket, find a box and attach a sponge; then they will pay ?15 for it.

clicky

That stuff works but gets washed off quite easy, if your planning a long run it could be worth putting some on. Don't flip your visor up when its raining to try and save it.
