PostPosted: 18:09 - 06 Feb 2010    Post subject: Oxford Panniers Reply with quote

Hello,

As my plans have changed to a 1 week Scotland trip with the other half, I was looking at panniers and found a nice set of Oxford panniers. Just wondering what people thought of them and if they're easy enough to fit?[/url] Also, I would be taking a tent and 2 sleeping bags which I imagine wouldn't fit in the panniers, what would be the best and most cost efficient way of attaching them to the bike?

Thanks again,
Steven

Totally misread the post, thought you said you were going to put a tent inside the panniers which indeed would not happen.

Just bungee the tent to the top of one of the panniers or across the back seat. The tent bag and the panniers will also need waterproof covers really. Compact sleeping bags will go inside the panniers, larger ones will have to go on the back seat. If you have a pillion which i'm assuming you do then you may want a luggage rack to put stuff on.

Actually, thinking about it, with a pillion and all that luggage you might want a bigger bike too. You can't take pillions on a CBT, or are you just very large and need 2 sleeping bags?

I have these panniers, and the tank bag as well actually.

They are quite good, hold a descent amount, and with the straps and fixing points on them, you can attach a lot to the outside of them too.

I find them a bit of a bugger to fit on the GSXR nicely, but on the bigger seat of the CBR600F they fit perfectly.

They come with shower covers, which I always fear would blow off at speed, but after 3 years they haven't so they must be safe lol.

Never known them to let water in when I've been caught out in a shower with out the covers on.

Just make sure you have bungies and you should have no bother with them, they can be expanded/collapsed to suit requirements but when expanded or heavily loaded they tend to droop a bit, so need support from additional anchorage with your bungies.

Edit: they also come with bungies IIRC.

Yeah they're good enough but the zips are sh*te, so don't put too much pressure on them... Thumbs Up

Yes I will be taking a pillion and it will be on my brothers CBR600. So bungee cords or net seems like the best idea then -do you think I would need a rack because I'll be 2 up?

Here's a quick pic of the GSXR this evening before setting off to uni, the panniers aren't expanded as I like to filter a lot.

That GSXR is absolutely stunning! Shocked Very Happy Love it! I would need to keep my back seat though so I guess that means I would need to buy a luggage rack? Can I ask what those army style bags are? Are they rucksacks or just covers?

That's just an army burgan strapped on, and all loose bits strapped up.

The panniers allow a pillion with no problems, I usually have my GF on the back with the panniers, but she's a fair weather pillion lol, so it gives me space to strap an extra bag on.

Also - I've never noticed a problem with the zips, they have been put under a lot of strain by me squeezing things into the bag unexpanded, and I've never had any problems. Perhaps mine are a newer/older model than dodger's

A bit of a high-jack but do the panniers scratch the panels?

I had a search and people were saying they don't move an inch once they're loaded up but I'm still a little unconvinced.

Oxford Sports Lifetime Expandable Tank bagI just won this For 20 inc delivery. Seems like a steal? Very Happy

SavageGSXR - that's good to know! I might get away with just strapping the tent to one of the panniers, I had a look at racks and they are really expensive!

I have Oxford panniers, and when the zips went on one of mine, Oxford took them back and replaced them without quibble! And the set they replaced them with are much better and come with a 25yr guarantee.

Anyway, I have an sv, and I regularly use my camping equipment (April to October every year) for rallies and weekends away.

I have panniers on first, then put my tent across the bike, right behind my seat, and then the sleeping bag behind that. I use bungee straps to criss cross across the lot and then a cargo net to tie the lot to each other - using the pannier handles. I also have a small tank bag too.

Sorry no pics, as have never considered taking one...perhaps I should for prosperity sake. Exclamation

That sounds like a good idea. I'll need to get us on the bike and see how much space there is on the back of the seat, maybe with some bungees and a net I could attach it to the back.

My bike loaded with the Oxford Sport panniers etc. but not for camping, so no tent etc. I've not done that on the road bike only the off-roader and no pics of that and not my nice panniers either!! Embarassed

You can just see the 'matting' I have to protect the bike. Mine came with the panniers (thanks MisterGixxer) but you can buy this from bike shops or camping shops and cut to fit. The straps have protectors on them, that if you load carefully seem to fit well.

I use black bin bags to line my bags rather than the plastic covers and this seems to keep contents dry, but obviously the bags get wet!

Oh yeah, I use a big sheet of chamois cloth underneath it all to stop it rubbing the paintwork...(that non-slip stuff is relatively new, and I've used the chamois technique for a loooong time).

That non slip webbing can be bought from Poundland for a quid for a giant sheet, more than you'll ever need to protect the fairings.

My suggestion of a rack is because to be fair to your pillion, there is not really going to be room on the back seat for her and a sleeping bag or tent on the seat. Also if you start stacking tents ontop of the panniers there's the risk they're going to rub on her legs or make her uncomfortable, you need to do a test fit with her on if that's the plan. The rack just means you can stack it all behind the seat, no problem for her. They are expensive, I'd like one for my Blade but they're ?65 even on ebay.

Ah...you have a pillion too, I didn't see that bit (mine is single seater conversion). Although I know lots of people use the bit between their headlights and their front mudgards for storage. And the pillion takes a rucksack.

They usually dump their kit at the camp site, then go off and find a supermarket for food and booze afterwards. Whereas I take all mine with me from the off.

This is me some place in East Europe with Oxford pannier's ... May be you can't see ... But they are not expanded ... Took every thing I needed for three week's ... A tent is bungee across the back seat ... Back pack for easy to get to stuff ... And top box had sleeping bag and air bed ... Plus lock and chain and a few tool's ... Map holder on the tank ... Got me around no problem ...

That protective rubber matting stuff is also sold in pound shops to put under your rugs top stop them slipping about on a wooden floor. It also stops your pillion sliding about when put over the pillion seat.

I have the oxford sport panniers, done me well for years.

Some tents will actually fit in them. My Vango Spirit 200 fits in an unexpanded pannier with room to spare for my mess tins, water bottle and brew kit, or a couple of bottles of wine.

Failing that. I can highly recommend ortleib dry sacks for strapping stuff on in. They were originally designed for canoeists to pack their gear in. I usually put the sleeping bags and dry clothes in the dry sack because they are light for sitting high up and far back on the bike. I can also be 100% confident they will remain dry. Even if I were to crash the bike into a river.

Here's me loaded for 2-up touring with camping. The dry sack is in the big green duffle bag along with some other stuff.

The two chairs got ditched, they were the thing that took the bike over the line from "heavy" to "overloaded".
https://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f216/stinkwheel/shetland%2008/Photo24_21.jpg

My top tip is do not leave with the panniers expanded. Also, give the girlfriend one pannier and tell her she can take anything she wants as long as it all fits in there.

Anther shot of the VFR so you can see the drybag:

I noticed in another thread you said you were going to a camping shop this weekend, so have a little hunt in there for some as I found some in a neat roll for stopping things sliding about in caravans! More expensive than the pound shop, mind! Rolling Eyes

I'll have a gander.

Going to go to another pound shop probably next week to see if they have any.

Thanks a lot for that! Your VFR looks great all packed up! This might sound a bit stupid but you have a luggage rack fitted, don't you? I got my tank bag and once it's expanded it's huge (nearly 50L I think), going to fit that tomorrow to see what it's like.

I have my theory test tomorrow, hopefully it will go well then I can get on with the DAS Very Happy
