PostPosted: 20:51 - 07 Feb 2010    Post subject: Does pushing a bike damage transmission? Reply with quote

Hi i just got a bike (my first) Honda xr125L.

I have to push it to my CBT as I want to spend all day on my own bike, trouble is it is a fair distance (3-4 miles or so).

Now that distance hasn't actually put me off pushing the thing, Rolling Eyes but I have read in the owners manual the following:

"Do not tow the motorcycle or coast for long distances while the engine is off. The transmission will not be properly lubricated and damage may result."

So my question is simple, will pushing it all that way damage it before I ever get to ride it?

I am desperate to ride it for my CBT but might draw the line at carrying it down there Smile

Have any mates with bike licences?

Friend of mine did the same. Me and another friend took him, his 50 with one of us on and him on the back on the hornet. Took him 2 of us went for a cuppa and a look round a bike shop got the call went back to the center and then home.

And don't under-estimate the distance of 4 miles! Long way when your pushing.
Thumbs Up

Pushing a bike will be fine. I assume the damage could be caused at faster speeds as the pistons wont be moving the oil around. Walking speed i cant see it being a problem

The problem will be the distance
Will get very very heavy.
Defo get it dropped off by a mate with a license or someone with a van

Hi

Can't see pushing it (within reason) doing any damage.

However there might be a legal issue with you not technically having a licence and having it on the road. Don't know but it wouldn't surprise me.

All the best

Contact the training school and ask if one of their riders could ride it there for you, or pick it up in a van, I got to do my CBT on my bike this way Very Happy

Where are you?
I'm sure there is someone on here who can ride it down for you or pop it on a trailer.
You really don't want to get to the centre all hot and flustered after pushing it that distance.

I wouldn't push it if I were you. 4 miles is a stupidly long distance. You'd have to give yourself 2 hours at least, which will be exhausting and challenging (could you train at the gym for two straight hours?) and then you'll enjoy the rest of the day far less than you would have.

Just use one of their bikes, or enlist help. Those really are the two most reasonable options. Where do you live?

Hiya folks thanks for all your replies.

I have decided to use the schools own bike, that way I will be fresh, I had underestimated how hard a slog it would be to push my bike down there, so thanks for those who spelled this out.

(I did something similarly crazy when I was a teenager and bought my first set of weights, I don't really want to repeat the experience)

As for those asking where I am from, I live in Reading, but have already upgraded my CBT with the riding school to use one of their bikes, but thanks for the thought.

Stick it on a trailer or hire a van... or get a mate with a bike licence to ride it (if they have the correct insurance).

I had to push mine to a petrol station, probably not even half a mile up hill, took me about 20 mins, very tiring work, especially after just being on it.

Massive smile on my face when she took me home though Laughing

Bike gearboxes are lubricated by the engine oil pump. If the engine is not running, there will be no lubrication to the gearbox bearings.

Several people running bike-engined cars have found this out to their cost by towing the car with a dolly - resulting in needing a complete gearbox rebuild.

At walking speed, it won't be a problem but I really wouldn't recommend it - even with a 125, pushing a bike 3-4 miles is going to get boring real fast.

When I got my first bike I walked the half a mile to my local petrol station, filled a can with about 3L of petrol and walked back. Even 3L seemed like it would make my arm drop off but it was perfectly do-able. They even sell petrol cans at the station. Why you'd push your entire bike I've no idea. All I had to do was show ID / proof of age to buy the fuel outright.

Last year I pushed my bike for 6 miles once.

Silly, embarrassing story I don't want to share the details Laughing It took me 2,5 hours. In the end I swear my RS was 100kg heavier than 3 hours earlier.

Anyway my gearbox is perfectly fine, never had problems with that. When I was pushing my bike I had it in neutral and was holding the clutch.

Completely pointless as in neutral, the rear wheel isn't connected to the clutch in any way.

I suppose that makes sense. The bike I walked to the petrol station and back for had never been on a UK road before and was properly at zero miles. I know because I had just finished building the bike and so I wouldn't have wanted to get to the petrol station with a bike that I didn't even know worked yet.

Turns out it did work though and it was a pretty good feeling to get on that road for the first time, although also quite scary Thumbs Up
