Well, i made a post in random banter about deciding what to do with a RS125 (top end siezure) that i gained.

So logic dictates, buy another one! Very Happy

Got the siezed one for ?95.
and the crashed, running one for ?50.

should be interesting, hopefully make some pennies too.

pics below.

also, anyone got any ideas whats damaged the piston, i was thinking the headgaskets gone (brown stain on surface) and its been leaking in and weakening the piston due to massive drop in temp, and its failed?

steve.

my vote is for powervalve hitting the piston. assuming the chip is on the exhaust side.

yeah, EX side, the guy that owned it said he heard a big "bang" and it cut out, ive removed the powervalve and there isnt a mark on it, but that being said, pistons are alloy, the valve is steel.

its apparantly quite common on them. a pin comes loose or something and it lets the valve slide further than it should? could be complete shit.

either way, you got a good deal with the prices.

Hi

No real way for the power valve to touch the piston on the RS125 engine (think Matt is thinking of the RS250 which uses a totally unrelated engine).

Those prices for the bikes are complete steals.

My guess would be that it has overheated and smeared half the piston up the side of the barrel (exhaust side being the hotest).

All the best

Keith

Kieth is correct, the RS250 engine was actually taken from the Suzuki RGV250 (VJ22 model I think) - Aprillia just changed the CDI to their own. Anyway, that engine is known for dropping powervalve pins into the engine with fairly horrific consequences.

I hate RS125s, but even I'd have them at that price.

I'm jealous Sad

heres a pick of the piston, looks like its been nipping up for a while, the locating peg for one of the rings is missing, so my theory is its worn out, rings have spun round and clipped the exhaust port.

Had one bike running, started to strip, clean and paint parts now.

I dont have a massive amount of experience with these, but usualy (depending on how its been ridden) 10k is were the grenade pin falls out and somthing nasty happens. Laughing

But, if its been looked after this might not be the case.

have a look at the base of the barrel, see if it says "aprillia/rotax"
If yours says somthing different like "mitika" its had the top end changed.

top end gasket sets arnt expensive, so if your wanting this bike to serve you well, it might be in your best interest to check it out, as its better to catch it now, than wait till it goes bang in a big way and your spending £300+ on a new barrel etc.

Hope this helps.
