Runaround needed.. Yam SR125 vs Gilera Coguar vs Yam RXS 100

Guys,

I'm currently looking for a cheapie to get me back on the road, after my rs125 blew up i've been itching to get back on a bike but i'm not exactly flush at the moment... i'd appreciate your opinions on my short list.

I've been abit more sensible with my choices this time, with some focus on reliability and fuel consumption, i love the speed of a 125cc stroker but at the same time i like generally riding more! So i'm prepared to live with a 4t 125 if it keeps me going. Also worth noting is that i'm 6ft 3, i'm pretty much going to look like a pratt on any of these bikes, so i'm looking for the one that would keep this to a minimum

So theres the Honda engined 2003 Gilera Coguar cruiser, which is the most expensive, but looks tidy, with good consumables. The Y reg Yamaha SR125 which sits in the middle price wise but is stolen recovered although no damage apparently and has done 22,000 miles, or the only 2 stroke, the RX-S 100, 25 years old, the cheapest of the lot, and again seemingly in good nick.

Any experiences or thoughts?

SR125 is a crap engine that snaps rockers and does all sorts of shit. not common, but theyre old bikes.

gilera cougar, no idea

RXS100, ticks all the boxes. costs about £20 for a top end rebuild and you never need to do that.

I would (personally) stay away from the Gilera - it might be fine, but i've no idea what parts availability is like, although Kickstart probably knows about these.

The SR125 as far as i know are ok, i have known a few people who run them and have no problems.

I guess i would say go for RXS - they are a known quantity, people on here rave about them and they are cheap to run

My daughter has an SR125. It crashes OK and hasn't had any problems. Hers hits about 65 max but will sit quite happily at that.

I had an SR125 for a while, she got crashed, abused and used in all weathers all year. Never let me down once and still looked ok to sell on for an average price.

I've owned two of the bikes in question. The SR and the RXS.

I bought my SR125 when I was 17 and passed my test on it. I kept it as a spare bike for when others broke down until this summer - when I sold it to my sister.

I bought it at 14k and took it up to 20k, it say constant use and was always kept outside. It managed to stave off rotting well for a Japanese bike and always could be trusted to go anywhere no matter how far. My final ride was a 300 mile trip from Cornwall delivering it to my sister who lives in Essex. Petrol consumption was so low that I didn't even have to worry about how many miles I did as it was so cheap.

I changed the oil and filter every 1000 miles or so (I was getting free oil at the time) and checked the valve clearances and camchain tension (its manual) monthly. After I used it in the spring of 2009, being used to bigger bikes it got caned around two up for a couple of months. This seemed to actually free up the engine and it went faster than it had ever done before, I got clocked at 68 2-up down a very mild incline by two other bikes .

My bike was a good example I'm sure and the constant maintenance is probably what kept the engine in good order, I've seen plenty SR's and TW's (similar if not same engine) that are noisy clanky and sounding like diseasels!

My RXS I got for 35 quid from the local breakers, I got it back on the road (including tax and test) for about 250 all in. Its much smaller than the SR and around town I think it would kick the crap out of the SR especially up to around 40 mph where it is very nippy. Its very light and while this is good for crossing town in a maniacal fashion it does lack the bigger feel that the SR has. On longer (30 mile or so) trips the RXS does feel like a toy bike almost where the SR would possibly be a more comfortable ride.

If you're mainly going to be riding in town then the RXS is by far the best choice for mental town driving. For longer trips where "nippiness" is less of a factor then I'd take the SR for a bit more comfort.

Excellent stuff, thanks for your replies. A couple of questions, the RXS is listed as de-restricted, what does this mean on this bike? Is it just the exhaust? and does it make much difference over a sotck one?

Also do you guys who have owned rxs' remember roughly how good they were on fuel? I'd have to ride the rxs 80 miles home but i presume it should manage this lol

why go for a custom style bike if you are well over 6 foot?

wouldn't a small trail bike be more suitable e.g. honda xlr 125 or similar?
