xj 600 n clucking gearbox

hello everyone.
i have got a xj600 n 1997 here in australia.
everytime i change gears, i hear a clunk noise, it happens either im going up or down,was told that the chain needed ajusting, what u guys think.

Might well be the chain i know mine used to get louder on gear change as it got looser. Also it might be your clutch needing adjustment. If it goes 'Klunk' when you first up it into 1st and the chain bounces up and down then it's both Laughing

ajusted the chain and the clutch cable, still no go,still got the clunk noise,the gear lever feels a bit stiff almost,do you guys think that it could be the clutch plates needing replacing.

one more thing, when i have the bike in the center stand and put it into first while holding the clutch in , the rear wheel still spins around.

Before adjusting the clutch cable you should adjust the release mechanism on the engine. The cable adjuster is just for setting the free-play in the cable not adjusting the clutch itself.

Thats the clutch needing adusting. It will be the cause of the clunking when your putting it in gear. Wind the adjuster on the handle bars in all the way, then take as much slack out of the adjuster on the side of the engine, then fine tune by turning the handle bar adjuster out till the rear wheel no longer spins, but the clutch doesnt slip at high rev's.

Sometimes the rear wheel will spin even with the clutch in simply due to drag from the oil.

I still think its worth adjusting your clutch cable.

All my bikes do this from my Little RXS100 to my TDM900. When was the last time the oil was changed?

Bikes sometimes do it due to a worn clutch. With a worn clutch in order to maintain sufficient friction at full throttle the clutch plates have to be run under more pressure meaning they are closer together when the clutch is pulled in. Thats what happened on my XJ600 anyway. I could never find a point of adjustment between slipping and dragging until i changed the plates. In your case it's almost certainly just in need of adjustment, but if this keeps happening the above is what i would be trying.

the oil been changed 2 days ago, i was advised to use 15w50, but i think i should have used 10w30 or 20w40,maybe the oil was to thick,i have ajusted the clutch as much as i could, i will change the oil again, and if that dosent work, i will have to change the clutch plates,

15-50 is fine I run it in my four.

Have you tried any of the dealers selling parts on ebay from Australia ?

Failing that check out the Divvy owners club in my sig. Pretty sure there are a couple in Aus who maybe able to help.

Neutral It's quite normal for the wheel to turn on the stand with the clutch in and bike in gear.
