hi all

I'm getting my little winter hack - a yammy ybr 125 - to run as I want it - there's only a couple of things left to sort. At the mo when its starting from cold it only just ticks over on full choke. It tends to die after half a minute & need restarting. After about three or four starts is just about warm enough to run although its not properly warm for about ten minutes. Is there a way to make the mixture richer? Is anyone who owns a ybr familiar with this?

Sounds normal tbh, i dont have a ybr but i imagine alot of bikes are the same. I usually leave mine with the choke on while i go inside and get my lid, gloves and college stuff sorted (usually about 5 mins) then the bike runs great. when i dont leave it as long to warm up it tends to run rough, its just one of the 'perks' of our lovely british weather Rolling Eyes

thats the prob though I can't leave the bike to idle because it won't - it just dies after half a minute and needs restarting.
Just had an odd thing hppen tho - just been in the garage to hook the battery up to the trickle charger for the night. I thought I'd start it, it ticked over and then died. I hit the starter and nowt. I tested the battery on the multimeter (after moving the widgets next to the battery around a bit) & hit the starter again. There was some crackling from the widget on the right hand side of the battery then the starter kicked in and she ticked over normally without dying.......(?????)

What is this widget thingy? It has the main live feed from the battery going into some form of cylinder looking thingy - sorry for getting technical Wink

???????

Ah right, i must've read your first post wrong Embarassed

Suppose it would help if we knew what a widget was Confused But if you say there's crackling of some sort, there could well be some bad connections/earths in there somewhere. The 'cylinder shaped thingy' sounds to me like the starter motor, which would make sense that there's a live feed going to it.
Other than that I'm not sure, although I'm still only learning like yourself, although I may be a little further on with the technical jargon Laughing. But there are a few ybr owners on here that should be able to help you out.
Is the bike left outside in our lovely weather? If it is, it could be damp electrics, makes my bike a bitch to start sometimes! Evil or Very Mad
hope I've helped in some kind of way and you get it all sorted.

Interesting. Maybe your idle speed is set too low, there's a screw on the carb that you adjust (check the owner's manual I think it's discussed in there). With choke on in this cold weather, mine starts pretty much first time and will idle at around 2.5-3k RPM, gradually increasing to around 4k RPM after about 3-4 minutes which is when I turn the choke off and it'll idle at around 1.1-1.2k RPM just fine. Might occasionally stall when I pull up to junctions at first but it takes longer to fully warm up so I'd expect that.

Other than that, it could be that your spark plug is bad. I fitted an iridium plug to mine which I'm pretty sure helps it a lot with cold starts. Or, there may be a fuel starvation issue which can take a fair bit of investigating (fuel tank/cap/fuel filter/air filter/carb could all be the culprit).

HTH. Thumbs Up

sounds like the exact same problem i have, i have to sit there for a minute or two bliping the throttle or it just dies

when i bought my xr125 it had been off the road for about 7 months, prob similar to your ybr, i rode the bike home after not being used for months and i think the old thick petrol has got into the carb, clogged it up a bit, and is causing it to die when its cold, keep meaning to get the carb off and clean it but really am quite lazy haha, maybe that will do the job

will let you kno if i ever get round to cleaning mine and if it makes a difference

Winter hack!! damn you man its my pride an joy, i might be lucky in that i have a 07 model with fuel injection so it always starts first time. I think most carb models will have your symptoms at some point or another. It will be warmer soon.

cheers chaps

carb was replaced a fortnight ago (choke seized up on old carb) and is prety clean. Plug is a month old iridium jobby (makes a superb difference- with old plug it was even worse). When bike is warm she runs fine - I'm seventeen stone and she toodles along at 60 on my 30 mile commute every morning and gives me 90 mpg so she can't be too badly set up. i've set up the idle speed to sit at around 1500rpm when warm. Its only a problem when cold - I can only dream of a 3ooo rpm tickover....

i agree its sounds like a bad connection or something - i justwish I knewwhat that thing was sitting nextto the battery - not the starter motor coz that sits down by the crank......
In terms of blipping the throttle i can't do that - as soon i giveit any beans he engine just dies. Bit of a bugger really.
