After being quoted inordinate sums of money £4500 by one company *cough*ultralase*cough*, and a very reasonable sum of money (£2500) by optical express.

I have come to ask for any tales of vision correction form the BCF populace, as by laws of probability at least one person on here has known someone who has had it done, or had it done themselves...

So Spill!

My mate's missus got hers done because she was squeamish of contacts and didn't like wearing her glasses for driving. Personally, I was gutted as I thought she looked HAAWWT with glasses, naughty secretary styleee but hey ho.

Anyways - she paid £2800 and then the day before the op, she went in for her "pre op check" and they told her it'd be another £800 because there was something wrong they'd not spotted before. She had to pay it because she'd psyched herself up for it for weeks and didn't want to back out. Can't remember who this was with but it's worth checking that the final price they quote is the final price you pay, and that's contractually written down somewhere.

As for the results, she had a mild short sightedness and it cured it totally. No adverse reactions, not a particularly long lay off after the work.

My mrs got her's done. She wore thick glasses before which hid her pretty eyes, she was pretty much blind... She can now see better than me and I have good eyesight. She keeps saying she would have paid £10k for how much better her life has become.

Go for it. She did optical express.

I'd have mine done if I could, but there's no op that can fix 'em, got undeveloped cells in my retina

It always makes me chuckle when the adverts state "£XXX per eye"..... as if you are only going to get the one eye done.....
yes yes I know some people may be gimpy in only the one eye but it's still amusing.

My ex's brother had it done, when it was first introduced, he said it was the absolute best thing he'd ever paid for in his life!!!

In fact, all the stories I've heard have been positive. Thumbs Up

Hi

Been tempted, but the stories about more glare from headlights at night puts me off.

Also I have heard that there are restrictions on diving (ie, due to pressure changes) if you have had it done, but a quick read round suggests that most people carry on anyway.

All the best

I have to say that glare at night from headlights is worse than before. How much worse is difficult to say though.

It's not been a problem though and would say the positives significantly outweigh the negatives for me.

Apparently its only as bad as wearing really smeary glasses looking through a smearey windscreen... so that its just a huge starburst effect...

Hi,

There are different types of refractive surgery as well as different levels of service so check the quotes are comparable.

Arround 90% of people achieve a 90% improvement in the prescription. This can take more than 1 treatment, sometimes a second treatment is included in the cost.

Do some research about the down sides, they are very keen to sell it but often a econmical with the truth about possible issues.

One of the main differences is the treatment is on the surface or if a flap is cut. The Flap option is a quicker recovery and less painful, but leaves a weakness in the eye and is more likely to cause long term dry eye issues. Military personal are only allowed surface treatment for this reason.
(diving and parachuting are the common ones normal people would consider).

It is possible for blindness or uncorrectable (even with glasses) to be a result of a poor treatment although it is rare.

Presbyopia occurs at a younger age if you have this done, although refractive surgery is now offered for presbyopia it is done by making one eye suitable for close up work and one for distance. This creates mono vision so you loose depth perception and can get some blurring. Not everyone can cope with this so they so it with contact lenses first.

I would not choose the company or treatment on cost alone.

Regards
C

My dad had it done.

He says it makes the world of difference but it was uncomfortable for the first few days. He said it was particularly uncomfortable having his head clamped in to the apparatus.

He wore an eye patch for three days and had drops for 7. It did get infected but that cleared up after another 7 days. His eyesight was really quite bad but it seems to be ok now. Its hard to tell, he suffers from pretty bad encephalopathy, he can see things well, but he can't always tell you what he's looking at.

I digress slightly but, his home help had put two pork chops in the oven for him. I went in later and took them out and asked what he was having with them. He said "potatoes" I asked if he wanted me to put them on, he said 'they're in the oven' We then stood over these pork chops for five minutes, me telling him 'those are pork chops!' and him saying (in a creepily earnest voice) 'no they're not' 'They are though' 'No they're potatoes...'

It was just his quiet absolute confidence in what he was saying, he had me second guessing at one point. So yes, it's fine, probably even better if you haven't suffered from acute liver failure.

As has been said though, glasses are nice. Not in all cases mind, but I like a person wearing glasses for that attractive geeky look, it can be quite winsome.

Two of my aunts had it done, one had no problems and said it was the best money she ever spent and the other had a few problems and had to go back for another session to correct their mistake. She can see better than before but not as well as they assured her. Overall shes happy with it.

From what I understand its a pretty standard procedure now though, do you get some eyedrops to numb your eyes?

If I had it done I would still wear glasses with plain lenses as I like wearing glasses ( It makes me look both attractive and geeky according to pa_broon) so there is little point in getting it done. The fact that it does not work 100% in all cases is a bit of a down point IMHO.

I had mine done by Optical Express about 18 months ago for the princely sum of £395 per eye. I can honestly say it's the best £800 I have ever spent. My vision is better than 20/20 and I get no glare at night.

I know it has a different effect on different people, but I would highly recommend it Thumbs Up

Have they even been doing it commercially for 20 years yet? I wonder about having it done, but I also worry over that same sort of question, and about follow-up, as there are not yet any really long term follow up data.

Also, as my eyes are now going longsighted (in the last 5 years) as well as being short sighted (which I have been since I was 11), I wonder whether getting maturity-onset longsightedness cancel out what you originally paid to have the shortsightedness corrected ... cos your eyes are going to deteriorate with age anyway.

you need a stable prescription to have it done, no sadly is not an cancelling out effect. it make age related long sightedness (presbyopia) earlier. They can try to fix it but then you have mono vision and no depth perception.

While enhancements can be done it's not unlimited.

I would love prefect vision I don't think I would have it done.

I had it done 8 years ago.

Would i have it done again??? yes
is it the all singing, all dancing cure??? no

my poor eyesight improved a great deal and for normal day to day stuff i dont need any glasses.
However i do suffer a little bit from starburst/glare at night when lights are facing me.
8 years on and they tell me i need glasses to read when the light is not good or the print is very small.

one thing that did catch me out afterwards was glasses and riding!

as i had always ridden a bike with glasses on, i was not used to the wind/grit in my eyes after i started riding again once the operation was done.
it caught me out many times before i clicked that i needed to get some glasses with plain clear lenses just for riding or keep the visor down.

I had mine done a few years ago - my eyesight was terrible; right on the limit where they could do surgery, but it is now better than 20/20 (I think it is called 6/6?).

Only thing I would add is that there are 2 ways to prepare the eyes for surgery - one involves slicing the front of the eye then folding it back, and one involves softening the eyeball, "squishing" the top layer to one side. I had the second (squishing) option, as although it is more painful and takes longer to recover from, doesn't leave your eye permanently weakened.

I agree with Hellkat on this one, nobody's actually grown old with it yet so I'll pass on being the guinea pig, thanks. My sister in law had it done for short sightedness, but now she needs glasses for reading anyway, so only had about 5 years of not wearing glasses.

Yeah, it's still too new for my liking.

I spoke to a bloke who had both eyes done at the same time (he signed a disclaimer) and he spent 3 months sat in the dark because his eye just couldn't take the light. Neutral
