Needing one of these for the brothers bike, it doesn't have one fitted so would probably be a good idea to get one as it's due an MOT and air blows through the seal. I tried eBay but couldn't find anything, any idea where I could get one? It's a N reg which I think is 1995?

What do you mean by manifold gasket?

If its exhaust then there are hundreds on Ebay.

I seem them but didn't think it was what I'm looking for. I'm looking for a gasket that goes between the start of the downpipes (manifold) and the engine.

To be fair it was running with the choke on, so was running at slightly higher revs than normal. When I first started it, it looked like there was some air escaping from the bottom of the downpipes but that went away after about 30 seconds.

I'll go out and check over it again soon and take a video once it's warmed up if you think that might help?

Edit: Just went out to start it and the battery is dead again, it must be dud Sad

No it's an after market exhaust I think, I'll double check that though. The noise isn't coming from the end can, it sounds like it's coming from the engine or downpipe.

Here's another video. I'm not sure if the noise is actually air escaping or if it's coming from the actual engine block. Doesn't sound good anyway, especially in the first video. Anyone have any ideas what it could be?

I have ordered gaskets, so hopefully I will be able to fit them and the noise disappear. Thinking of buying a full service kit and giving it a once over to see if that helps any. Neutral

With the bike running put your hand over the end of the can to block it. If the exhaust is in good condition then the bike will cut out. Any leaks will become very obvious.

Collectors are notorious for rotting away.

Hi

From those videos it certainly sounds like the exhaust is blowing badly near the front. Possibly exhaust gaskets but to be honest sounds more like a crack or a hole rotted in it.

Possibly one time something like Redex could be used. Makes the exhaust smoke like crazy, so you can then see where the smoke is coming from.

Came home after work and attacked the bike with a ratchet! What a pain in the arse! Got the whole exhaust system removed (quite proud of myself really Razz) but while cleaning the downpipes I found a hole!

I'm guessing that is the cause of the noise then? Can it be fixed or do I have to buy a new downpipe? Sad

Told you about the collectors Laughing

They can be welded, I did one on a CBR6 last weekend. Give then a good poke first to make sure that there are not any other weak areas.

New stainless steel downpipes can be had for around £100 off ebay.

That should be weldable, but given how rusty they are a few more bits are probably just about to blow.

If you can get replacements for reasonable money the do.

Thanks Marki - I had a search on ebay and cheapest I could find was £155 which is adds up when the bike needs a new battery on top of that and a service!

They do feel really week but I'll give it a poke to see if it's worth getting welded, cheers.

So would you say that was the cause of the noise? I wouldn't want to replace it and still have the problem! Shocked

They are really rusty, but are made worse in the picture because I covered them in WD40 and was trying to clean them up a little.

I would say that it added to the noise. I think the pipes are not sitting correctly in the head, probably due to knackered exhaust gaskets. Its very hard to tell when your not actually next to the bike.

When the exhaust is cold stick your finger over the hole and see what happens to the noise. Even better if you can then cover the end of the can.

Well the pipes and everything are off the bike now, not going to go through all the hassle of fitting them again until they are repaired/replaced Smile

Where the downpipes are bolted to the head, (or "not" as the case may be), looks very bodged up. You need to clean out the exhaust ports really well before sticking some new pipes on. Are all the mounting studs ok?


Well that was an idea - strip the rust off it, get it welded the paint it with black exhaust paint. It would save a lot of money but I would hate if it were to develop another hole a month later, but I suppose it's taken 16 years to get that one.

As far as I could see they were also no gaskets fitted to the downpipes either. The studs seem to be fine which is good Smile

Where's that? I can't see it from the picture Neutral Your probably right, its just money, getting a decent second hand set would be the best option.
