Was looking at getting a new can for the r6, had a look at an arrow can on M&P site but they list "RACE CAN" and "ROAD CAN" now i know the road one has a BS no. stamped into it i think but whats the actual differences in:

performance
sounds
weight
and regulations i.e the law

is it worth getting a race can or just sticking with a road can
as i had a arrow system on my nsr125r which said not for road use stamped on the side of the can but i never got stopped for that

any ideas cheers guys Thumbs Up

Race cans will be lighter, louder, give more performance gains, and they're not road legal so you could end up getting a ticket and/or a vehicle defect rectification notice.

Is it worth getting a race can? That depends what you're wanting from the can.

well i have a beowolf can on the sv650s and that has a bs stamp on it and its still pretty loud as theres a baffle that comes out, its a case of i dont wont to spend a load of money on a race can just to be able not to use it.

why do they make them illegal anyway is it just because of the noise they produce or is there something else

Apparently having to have a BS stamp is in fact just that, BS.

Didn't this law just change recently?

Unless the can has something along the lines of "Not For Road Use" stamped in it. Then it's up to the MOT tester to determine whether it is road legal or not. Not the police.

Although they could serve a vehicle defect notice to get it checked out, in which case you just put the standard can back on.

You could, hypothetically of course, have a race can and cover the stamp stating "Not for Road Use" with some silver sticky back vinyl tape.
If the tester can't see it then he can't fail on it Wink

It's down to MOT testers to decide if it's quiet enough to pass the MOT. If you're stopped by the police and your exhaust does not meet the exhaust and emission requirements of the law then you could get in trouble regardless of what the MOT tester thought of the noise levels.

Fit an exhaust that isn't road legal and you could get in trouble for using it. But the reality is that as long as you're not taking the piss by using at at full whack in residential areas then you're unlikely to get done for it.

What are you wanting from a new can?

My MOT tester doesnt even bother mentioning the can. As he said to me on the ZXR it's a waste of time, all people do is bung the OE one on before the test, and then swap it over when they get back.

He even commented on how nice it used to sound, Laughing.

Hi

Legally it needs a BS stamp or E mark. Being legal and MOT rules are different (and further it seems possible for an exhaust to be quieter than the legal limit but still illegal if noisier than standard, although that seems to be something that normally only seems to get thrown at car users).

On most bikes don't expect any great difference in power (there are exceptions, 1200 Bandits gain a fair amount). Almost certainly not enough to be really able to feel (although if not set up you might lose bottom end power and so feel more of a top end rush).

All the best

Keith

I had gsxr600/1000's with yoshimuira race cans and only got pulled for it once and got a vehicle defect notice on a 2 week old bike with 800 miles on the clock.
I only got stopped because my mate had a small reg plate they weren't really bothered about the noise I think they were more bothered with the fact that I rubbed the not for road use writing off My mate had the same can and you could still see the writing on his.

Since I got my Termi's fitted there has been a noticeable improvement in the bike. It's much smoother at lower revs and picks up much quicker. Plus they look and sound like the proverbial dogs... Cool

I'd love to whack a new can on, however:

GSXR600 Stock can: £1100 insurance.
GSXR600 Aftermarket (No performance gain): £7800. Shocked.

TPFT btw.

The fucks that about? £6,700 for an aftermarket exhaust? If you did it online, I suggest ringing them up directly, as their systems can't work some things out properly.

What's the difference in having a baffle in / out? I want a new can but wan't something that looks nice, preferably a stubby and sounds nice and loud.

I like the look of the 1st & 3rd ones there. Plus I could go an pick the can up from Blue Flame as they're only about 8 miles away.

Don't worry about about being pulled over, your bike cant make much more noise than my SP1 with race cans Laughing

I have been past many differn't cops, whether panda, traffic, PCSO, cops on the street, none have bothered.

Don't worry about things like that, there not important Razz
