Carlisle is about as north as you'd want to stay in the UK. ____________________ Be careful whose advice you buy, but, be patient with those who supply it. https://www.rafting.co.uk/orchy.htm
^^^Try this link, Ive done it before and it was amazing! I cant remember the names of the other places that do it but there is a few. The rafting depends on weather conditions and the depth of the water. I`ve rafted a few times over the years and if the water is too shallow to raft, they offered us alternative stuff to do like dive bombing off the rock faces into the river pools and rope swing things that you go on and jump into the water. (Im not sure if it was this actual company that offered us this,as ive used a few, so you will need to ask) ...
Look at this...

You can stay in these teepees and I think they house about 8 folk, I havent used them but Ive heard many good reports. Plenty to do about there but i would think twice about the swimming in the loch.
Now, if your planning on going for a swim, I would try the rafting first as you will have an idea of how (body shockingly) cold the water is, as they make you jump in to get an idea, although you do have the guides with you as well.
Superb part of the country.

I'd go with Tonka's suggestion of somewhere round Fort William. It's a good base to go exploring, from the beaches of the Western Isles to Glen Coe.
Just outside Fort William up towards Spean Bridge and Roy Bridge there are an abundance of self catering cottages. Not mutch in the way of nightlife from what I can remember but it's not that far into Fort William.

I dont know what the set of 4 mates is. If it's 2 couples then try this place just outside Spean Bridge Personal recommendation.

What time of year are you going up?
As for swimming in a Loch, go for it, I used to do it all the time as a kid when my mum and dad used to take us to stay up in Glen Nevis in the summer
When you are up for the week make an effort to try and go on a whisky distillery tour. ____________________ Current; 10' Aprilia Dorsoduro 750.
