I spent ages looking on the side where you fill the oil, couldn't find anything that looked like a drain plug, just engine nuts and stuff.. looked on the other side and clocked this. Bit big though.

I'm clueless.

The oil drain bolt will be on the same side as the side stand. This allows the oil to drain out from the bottom of the engine when it's on the stand. The bolt is normally about 1 inch in size and on the very underside of the engine. Laying under the bike with it on the side stand should immediately reveal a large bolt at the very bottom of the engine.

Nothing underneath, just the small engine nuts as on the other side.

I figure that must be it.

One thing watch out for. Some engines that have side oil drain bolts, like 1985 and on Honda XR/XL250 engines, also have a gearshift return spring bolt near the oil drain bolt. DO NOT remove this gearshift return spring bolt! If you do, you will have to remove the engine from the frame and do a lot of work to reposition the spring. As I remember, back in the dim dark 1960s there were some two stroke engines that had the same problem. Unfortunately, I can't remember which ones. I went back and checked all my old shop manuals, but I could not find the engine. Oh well, just be aware of this little trap the manufacturer has set for you!

To verify as an ex XR owner... yes.

I'm not sure where the oil strainer is mounted... i believe it's behind the bolt... Make sure you clean that too since the XR125 does not have a cartridge-style oil filter as such.

I've no idea about your bike specifically but it looks identical to the plug on my Honda CG125:

I would've said that looks like the oil filter gauzey thing. On my cg the oil drain bolt is underneath and has a little metal guard to protect it.

But follow these guys advice Razz yes.
