Radiators are probably the most important thing to check. Beyond that they are built like tanks and tend to be pretty reliable as long as the wiring isn't too badly hacked around with.
Epic bikes for sure, I miss mine ____________________ 2010 Triumph 1050 Sprint ST |

3000 to 3500 is a fair price for an earlier SP1 as long as it's tidy or has a few tasty toys with it.
Without a PCIII fuel consumption is absolutely shocking, I averaged 70 miles to reserve generally, with the PCIII you'll generally get 100 or so.
Tyres are totally dependant on how agressive you are with it, being captain smooth (and a bit slow) I had no issues with mileage, whereas I sold it to Blackwolf who promptly ate those 016s in a matter of weeks
Just keep in mind that the SP1 was a born and bred race bike, it takes a fair bit of tinkering to simply get them to behave in a 30 limit, let alone get them set up right for bumpy UK roads. Budget for a proper suspension checkover and setup when you buy one. ____________________ 2010 Triumph 1050 Sprint ST |

I've owned mine just about six months now, and done about 3000 miles. When I was looking to buy I was after the tidiest original condition I could find.
If you're after an SP-1 they were only made for the UK/Europe in Red. There may have been a couple of one off specials, but I personally would look for a tidy bike with the original paintwork. The Castrol reps may look great, but they'll almost certainly have been binned and/or raced. The quality of the paint job can also be pretty patchy, and they won't be worth as much as an original condition SP-1 in a 5/10 years time. In fact, tidy, unmolested examples are getting pretty hard to find. I'd also avoid aftermarket rear sets (unless the originals are still with the bike) for similar reasons.
In terms of modifications, I actually don't have any issues with the stock suspension. It's certainly on the firm side, but fully adjustable, and it didn't take long for me to fettle it to suit my weight/preferences. Mine came with an Ohlins steering damper fitted (a common mod, usually with a Harris kit) and I wouldn't say it helps all the time but it's certainly been useful on occasion
As noted above, a PCIII is an absolute must. Without one the bike is jerky to the point of being dangerous and drinks fuel at an alarming rate. The PCIII properly smooths out the low end throttle response (making the bike usable in town), dramatically improves the economy, and ups the power a fair bit throughout the range.
Generally, aftermarket exhausts don't give dramatic power advantages. Honda designed the originals very well so as not to sap the power. And I believe a lot of the more affordable aftermarket jobs (especially high level systems) actually reduce the power marginally against stock (even when re-mapped). So unless you can find something with a high end full system (unlikely as owners would probably sell them separately), then the stock cans are fine. They're better made than 90% of the aftermarket stuff, and again the fact they're still there indicates that they bike's less likely to have been binned. Of course, they don't sound half as good.
Other than that, they're very well made but check the general condition of everything. If you can, ask to take the side fairings off and check the radiators and mountings aren't twisted or damaged in any way. As with any bike, a shiny engine and pipes also indicates it's been well cared for.
Re tyres: You should get 2-3k out of some sticky tyres. Mine came with Dunlop D208s and they were abysmal and gave little traction/feel especially at the back end. Quickly changed to Pilot Powers and they're brilliant. Seem to be wearing well after 1000 miles too.
Pic for you:

One other thing I forgot to note, check the radiator fan spins freely. if it gets toppled over the fan usually takes the brunt of it and has a habit of getting jammed against the rad (as was the case with mine when I brought it). Common sense applies here though, please don't try this if the bike is hot ____________________ 2010 Triumph 1050 Sprint ST |

The plastics do have a bit of a tendancy to go a bit brittle on them, the nose cone on mine had a couple of little splits, I'd almost be questioning if they are original fairings though, as I can't say I've ever seen an SP1's red start to fade. As long as it's just the fairings and not the mounts that are scruffy then I wouldn't be worried. At the risk of sounding like a stuck record, just make sure you check those radiators and the mounts behind them. Beyond that it's common sense, scuffs and dings on the forks, swingarm and frame ____________________ 2010 Triumph 1050 Sprint ST |

As others have said, try to get one with decent cans and a PCIII. This can be bought afterwards as long as you factor in the cost. A decent aftermarket half system DOES give good benefits over stock, a good 5-10BHP. It's the downpipes that Honda designed really well, so full systems don't give a huge benefit.
I paid £3900 for mine 3 years ago with all the usual PCIII, decent cans, undertray, K&N etc with 13,000miles. FSH. So unless its mint with less miles I wouldnt want to be spending much more than £3500.
Get the suspension setup properly too, I don't mean reworked just setup by a professional for your weight etc. It's the only bike I've ridden where the adjustments actually make a large difference, such an improvement when setup properly.
Looks to me like your bike has been resprayed, well atleast the tank and possibly the rear cowl. The Honda decal on the tank seems to be in the wrong place and the rear cowl looks too glossy, but that might be due to you polishing it, as standard they're a Satin finish so quite dull.

yeh cheers for that gav. i would rather not go over £3500 but tbh its looking increasingly like its gonna be around summer time when i buy a sp1 so should i factor in people raising there prices or is the market still leaning towards the buyers. i mean i`m not cancelling out finding a good example in a shop and part ex`ing my b1h but then again i`ll then be forking out around 1k on the bike then further more on the interest on the finance. i think best bet is going to be loan and buy a sp1 tbh better example for less money!
so anyone interested in a zx6r b1h in black |
