painting exhaust

Hi guys

Just picked up a cheap hartford vr125z (taiwanese, CG engine) for the missus to learn on. The exhaust needs painting again as the finish has really degraded. Its not blowing or anything. Its that black stuff that scooters often have. Can i just take it off, spray it and replace it, or are there any mechanical issues i need to be aware of? Cheers in advance

many people have just sprayed over the top with that high temp BBQ spray paint and has looked fairly reasonable from pictures that i have seen.

I tried bbq paint on my tzr exhausts, after the first long hot run all the paint flaked away from the down pipes so that was £5 wasted.

Now I use PJ1 exhaust paint about £6 for one can just enough for both exhausts and respray once a year I have found pj1 to be excellent

On my scooter i had a few years back, I used a can of high temperature paint. Just rubbed it down cleaned it up and sprayed it on. It flaked after a while but i rubbed it down and gave it another coat and it never came off again.

What would you rub the exhaust down with?

PJ1 does not mention painting exhausts, would an exhaust paint that has a higher temp rating not be better?

Rub it down with wire wool/brush.
As its a cheap exhaust it may be worth wrapping it? Should keep it lasting for longer and keeping the rot away?

Would wrap not just collect dirt and if the bike was left out in the rain, water as well?

i think the wrap hardends and becomes non porous

Back in the day Sperex was the stuff to use. It wasn't very durable but I don't think that any aftermarket paint is going to last very long under conditions of such extreme heat.

I used wire wool and Plastikote matt BBQ paint on the downpipes of the GPZ.
It all lasted for a number of months of daily commuting before the colour started fading and I had to respray.
