Actually, probably more than that, and no, I'm not trying to sell you a 5p resistor for £30!

So how to get more power out of your bike?

When you go to grip the throttle, grip it with your hand further 'up' the grip, so your wrist is angled upwards more.
'Simples.', as they say.

Sounds simple and perhaps a bit silly, but I'd bet it gets the promised result the majority of the time for the majority of people.

I think I first noticed this years ago on my zx6 - my wheelies would come down, but I wasn't running out of revs.
Realised that I was actually running out of wrist movement!

Anyway, starting with your wrist up means at mid-throttle it's at a neutral position where it's more flexible, so as well as being naturally on the power more, you have more flexibility.

It won't help everyone*, but if you're not consciously doing it, it's worth giving a go and seeing how it feels Thumbs Up - do be careful of course; you may find it works a little too well.
When racing the 675, even with a 'hacked' quick action throttle, I found I had to form myself to do this, 'resetting' my position before exiting a corner at some points.
Definitely makes a decent difference to me when 'launching'.

*For instance if you've got a small bike, then this thread probably isn't for you!

The problem is, an awful lot of people don't seem to manage to go faster, despite their desire to Wink.

Theres a similar trick in cars. For more fuel 'efficiency' just crank your seat back a couple of notches and youll be using slightly less throttle Smile

until you get used to it or crash because you can barely reach the wheel

So, when I hit the throttle stop with my normal grip, this will enable me to go another 10%?

Presumably, If I grip my bar even further round I'll get another 10%?

The potential gains are boundless!

I thought about this a while back I think it was on the TDM when I was at a set of lights I moved my handfurther up the throttle a rest when the lights went green, I hoisted a massive wheelie and soiled my pants, I haven't done it since.

It depends how flexible your wrist is Wink.

While part of this you probably do 'get used to', part of it is that you do have better control at mid-throttle, where you're likely to be getting on the power coming out of a corner, which is just when you need it.

I know what you meant.

I think I grip quite high anyway and roll the throttle in my fingers rather than holding it in a vice-grip

I though most sporty bikes were only 1/4 turn throttles anyway? Pretty sure my throttle is near 1/2 turn from none to full and I still have no issues getting to full throttle comfortably.

Often modern powerful bikes have a bit too much travel in the throttle as a form of idiot-control. I believe TVR did this on their accelerators to make up for not having traction control too.
I’m not sure of the exact rotation, but I’d say most of the modern bikes I’ve ridden have had more travel than I’d want – so that definitely if you start with your wrist in a neutral position with the throttle closed, it’s uncomfortable at wide openings – which is even less ideal if you’re also using your hands to try and control direction at the same time.
A quick action throttle is definitely ‘on the list’ for my GSXR.

I like to fit 1/5-1/6 fast throttles as most standard 1/4-3/5 turn throttles are almost impossible to turn fully.

Once when Bike magazine asked Rossi how the average person can go faster on their bike Rossi replied:

"Open throttle earlier, brake later."

Venhill quick action throttles are worth their weight in gold on a track bike.

Definately used as a form of built in idiot control on road bikes though.

G, I'm very disappointed Laughing I seriously doubt I will get any further acceleration or speed from my CG using this method. I always grip my throttle straight on to begin with and never have a problem twisting it to max anyway Razz

If I wasn't using all of the throttle on my bike all of the time it wouldn't get anyway anyway Wink

Thus I said it wouldn't help everyone Wink.
On my NSR I would accelerate from a stand still at around 9k rpm, using the clutch to keep the engine at peak power as the road speed increased in first. Probably wouldn't have helped then, but may still have helped when I came to a corner.

Worth giving a go regardless for the corners, to see if it does make a difference - don't blame me if your skinny tyres can't handle the massive extra hit of power, though Razz.

Another little 'feel' tip that probably will wear off more is to decently lube both your throttle cables and under the tube - doing this to the TRX after it had been a bit heavy gave the 'feel' of more power a lot better than a dynojet kit and exhausts ever could.

I quite like the throttle i've got on my minimoto - I think I measured it as 1/32. Might think that's fine as it's just a 40cc, but 6.2hp being chucked out a 20kg bike with low gearing and tiny tyres on a shiny surface isn't so secure - however it was still perfectly controllable if you weren't cack-handed.

It does work. Most throttles require you to twist further than comfortable, to go WOT. My SP1 was a pain for it and I really noticed it on the track. Fitted a HRC quick turn throttle now and its much better, normal twist is enough to go WOT Smile

I was taught this when I did my CBT. They ever brought it up again when I was doing my full test a couple of years later.
Actually thought it was part of the very basics for riding!

Kinda missing the point - come back when you've ridden a real big bike for a while Wink.

I'm far from the only one that's got used to not using all the throttle all the time - in my experience plenty of people end up having an experience like Sugartits' when reminded about this, thus the post.

Does no one else do the creeping thing with your fingers where you turn the throttle even further without actually moving your wrist?

But why WOULD you think about it when you're still hitting 60 in just over three and a half seconds. See plenty of people that could easily get a lot more from their bikes, yet like the idea of paying lots of money for very small gains from 'performance mods'.

That's basically what I'd often do on track coming out of a corner - obviously don't want to be too jerky at that point.

When you have 100BHP+ underneath you, you have more to concentrate on than how WOT you are, plus even partial throttle they accelerate very quickly so it is something you can easily overlook.
