Rolling Eyes
well my cousin has a 2003 yamaha r1. we always have arguments and he seems to think the r1 is the be all end all of bikes. he says its more 'racing inspired' than CBR's. he think his bike is 100x better than my 954rr in every aspect, handling, speed, and comfort. im so sick of arguing with this kid. is anything he says true? can some of you gimme some info to throw at him to shut him up?

If its the best bike in the world how come it dosent make up 100% of bike sales?

Would you try rideing one through the gobi desert if you had a bmw RG?
Would your ride one accross america if you were offered a goldwing instead?
If your a courier in london?
If you can't afford the serviceing costs of a modern bike?

Its an excelent piece of engineering but its simply not possible for there to be a "perfect" or best bike. Anyone who claims otherwise is a bit of a tard tbh Thumbs Down

Who cares?

The ability of the rider is what it comes down to. Put a bad/ not as good rider on an amazing bike and yes they'll be able to go flat out on the straights and stuff but so can anyway. Put them on a bad bad and they can't do anything well. Take an amazing talented rider and place them on a good bike and yes they will be able to ride it flat out on the straights but he will also be able to use the bikes power and ability more through the corners and bits where speed comes down to your own ability.

Let your riding do the talking, and a bike is only as good as it's rider at the end of the day really. If having an R1 makes him think he is God, then fair enough, what ever makes him happy. But when he gets overtaken on a twisty road by someone on something like an RS125 or RS250 then he can eat his words. Or just overtake him on your FireBlade which is also a nice bike and make him eat his words.

The ones who do nothing but go on about how good they are tend not to be good or fast riders. There are plently of people on this forum who are good and fast riders and don't go round telling the world about it, they let their riding speak for itself and it does. Let him be, and point out that a bike is only as good as it's rider.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

if you ask me hes just been a 16/17 year old saying his bike does 6000000mph etc. although i must admit an R1 is my favorite bike (a supermoto thumper following Very Happy) but like zero said, its impossible for there to be a perfect bike...

Do you find when you twist your right hand all the cars and vehicles become a sort of long streak of colours? Laughing

Personally with all the bikes I have owned, my favorite in my small amount of time on it, is the R1.

However, having not ridden the 954rr, I can not comment on which is better.

Maybe the R1 thrives on its reputation?

I have heard the latest R1 power delivery is not too clever, seems to have lost its low down grunt and has a lot more of a pow! power band.... Only heard that though, I have not verified it.

The way I see it:
Litre class bikes allow you to be lazy on the road.
I like having the instant 'go' anywhere and everywhere.

As a road bike for going fast for people that don't want to bother with putting a lot of effort in, they are great.
If I wasn't so worried about my licence I'd happily take one as a fun road bike (and did a while ago).

For actually developing your riding or properly pushing a bike, I would say they aren't so great. The amount and range of power does mean that you can be lazy, especially when riding with smaller bikes. While other bikes may be braking late and trying to keep up corner speed, it the litre bikes can just wait untill their upright after the corner and crack the throttle.

To really use the potential of a litre bikes does take a lot skill; definitely more than a smaller bike. However a lot of owners don't seem to get to that point (I know I didn't)

As to which is best... As others have said, why exactly does it matter?
Go do a few track days, then invite him on one. It'll make you feel all the better when you shoot past him that you're on the 'inferiour' bike Smile.

And MrC...
The R1s can go round corners fast as well though Wink.

so can I

and as you know - that has nothing to do with the bike

I have stomped race prepped cbr600s and R1s and fireblades by the dozen (on my zx9 on the track)

Conversely I have been comprehensively embarassed by rs250s, supermotards, and notably a 10 year old zzr600 with no fairing lowers and a guy with mismatched 2 piece leathers held together with duck tape and home made knee sliders who was gliding round Cadwell bouncing from exhaust to centrestand and back again, power sliding out of corners and backing into them

saying any bike can go round corners better than another is pretty pointless as 90% of cornering capability is pure rider, not bike

Ah... but the other 10% means that you would go faster on the r1 Smile.

For myself I'd be willing to bet that I'd lap most tracks faster on a zx6 than a zx12; but I've still got a lot to learn.

Don't the latest r1 and zx12, unmodified, have the same top speed anyway? Very Happy

I hear the ZX12 is the most uncomfortable bike ever.

The R1 is like a sofa! Laughing

There is no doubting that the R1 is a good bike but its far from being the fastest or best handling bike ever!

you are taking the piss obviously and have obviously never ridden a zx12 - it's the one thing all the reviewers rave about (apart frm the power obviously)

it's massive, there's loads of room and it's tall so yer legs aren't scrunched up either

bahahahahahahahaaa

absolutely hilarious Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

a classic post, well done Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

lucky to get to 175 on any of the litre bikes, some will push 180 - none will hit the (genuine) 300kph limiter in stock trim and many not even in tuned trim

you have my word on this

How do you make a judgment like that if you've never ridden one? It could be the best handling bike made so far...
