On a normal car licence?
I will never need a trailer.
I think I may of heard by rumour that I could long a while back if I removed/altered the parts that are required by a trailer like 5th wheel.
Does anyone know?
Confused

Err - don't be stupid.

Of course you can't - that's probably well over the weight limit for a car licence.

Well for a start you'd have to be over 21 to drive it and hold a Full Catagory C1 Licence and then Insurance would be mega high and so would running costs etc.

Why would you want one anyway, unless you were gonna use it as its intended purpose?

The maximum weight vehicle you can drive on a car licence is 3.5 tonnes (3500kg).

You can drive something weighing between 3500kg and 7500kg with a category C1 licence, or anything over 3500kg with a category C licence.

[edit] Also, why would you want to drive a tractor unit without a trailer? [/edit]

You gotta admit it would be pretty cool turning up at the pub in that thing.

I am in my mid 30s and own my own company, need just a tractor unit for advertising purposes. If I need hgv1 for it fair enough, i will spend the money for it.

That's where I stand.

edit
Just found my licence, i have c1.. looking kind of good then

If I am correct what's his face the boxer. Chris Eubank has an american rig in London but no HGV licence. The vehicle has to have the 5 wheel removed and plated over and then recatagorised by the department of Transport.

I think so any way but then again I could be talking out my arse.

Regards

Andy

I mean the year, the info on the DVLA site for categorys only applies if you passed after 1997.

Looking at my licence the c1 catergory is valid from 03 03 93 to 30 06 43 so i guess 1993

thanks for the link Thumbs Up

You need a hgv cat 2 licence for that unless you have a trailer.

You cannot use one on a normal car licence.

I have a class1 license

as far as I remember it has nothing to do with the actual weight of the thing, it is to do with the Gross Vehicle Weight at which it is plated (this may be possible to "recategorise" but I don't know)

since that is a tractor unit, my guess is that it would be plated at 42 tons is it now? (used to be 38) train weight and not plated at all for solo

You cannot do a class1 license anymore, you have to do class 2 first and then do the class 1

to drive that would cost you a couple of grand in training and tests, to buy it would cost you (guess) £75k - no-one will lease you one without an operators license

all in all

stupid idea Wink Laughing

Given the fact that quite a few horseboxes (the rigid types) are driven on car licenses then I think calling the question/questioner 'stupid' is more than a little harsh.

technically they aren't any more

the most you can drive on an old car license is 7.5 tons now I think you need to pass a test to drive anything between 3.5 and 7.5tons

let me be clear this does not mean that the vehicle weighs 7.5 tons - it means that the maximum it is allowed to weigh is 7.5 tons - this is riveted to a plate just inside the passenger door

taking it to a weighbridge will make no difference

in this case a unit like that will be plated at 42 tons I think - whether or not it ACTUALLY weighs less than 7.5 tons is immaterial it is the plated weight which governs which type of license you need to drive it

I don't know but I guess it is possible to replate with the kind of mods described but that thing will probably have 16 or more gears and they are dreadful to drive with no trailer anyway, if it is possible to drive without training by replating then it bloody well shouldn't be imho

and they cost a bloody fortune to buy

and like I said no-one will lease you or rent you one without an operators license and if you wanted to rent then you couldn't modify

the list of reasons not to is a big one

like I said stupid idea

and btw if a post ends with a Wink Laughing it's generally accepted to be pretty much tongue in cheek

A horse box vehicle is somewhat different to a HGV tractor unit though isn't it. Razz

Mr C seems to know what he's on about. I passed my car licence in 1997 just before these new rules were introduced. I can drive upto 7.5 tonnes (plated).

Is the type of thing I had in mind, not exactly something you would suspect is drivable without some form of HGV certification, but nonetheless Wink
