HONDA CG125 Sticky Gears

Hi Guys,

I've noticed that over time my gears under the left foot seem to be getting more and more stiff.
It's a 97 Model with over 5000 miles on the clock. I've never done anything to lubricate this part as i'm not sure where to look. Is this a quick easy fix that can be done on my own or should i take it into a garage?

Hi.

This could be something as simple as the gear lever needing some lubrication. Check that the joints that link the actual gear selection lever to the shaft that goes into the engine are lubricated properly. Lithium based (white) grease is good for this.

Also, when did you last change the oil? New oil could make a difference to gear selection if you've been running if for some time.

When I rebuilt the bottom half of my CB125 engine I noticed a fair bit of corrosion on the gear selector shaft that runs the whole width of the engine case. It caused the gear change to be very stiff, so stiff that I couldn't push the gear change lever by hand. The fix was easy but I had the engine in bits at the time.

I last change the oil about 500 miles. I use the Castrol one recommended on the Honda sticker that's on the bike and mentioned in the service manual.

Something I never considered is the clutch cable. Check to see if there's too much slack in the cable, it might not allow the clutch to operate fully if there's too much. You want a little play in the lever so you're not stressing the clutch mechanism all the time.

Also, try changing through the gears with the engine switched off. It probably won't go into every gear without the engine running, you might need to wheel the bike forward to go through all the gears, but does it feel like a positive gear change where the pedal strings back or does the pedal feel stiff?

The gears do feel stiff. When i'm stationed at the traffic lights, i go from second gear into neutral, instead of first and then neutral, because that makes it hard to come up from one to neutral. This used to be fine before.
I'm thinking of doing an oil change early but it's so cold out there. It might improve the gear shifting.
Do you think silkolene is better than castrol?

Actually, i must admit the clutch cable has also developed a bit of slack since I've riding this almost 1.5 years now.
I must get out there and sort this out.
I hope this is easy fix

Hi guys, I must say that my gear problem seems to have rectified just by adjusting the clutch cable slack on the left hand bar. By doing so, the clutch feels very responsive as well. I never knew this would be such an easy fix.

Make sure you keep on top of keeping the chain tight and lubricated, the tires up to pressure and the oil too! Other smaller maintenance tasks include checking your brake pads / shoes and even checking all of the bolts are tight and that your bike isn't about to fall apart from being ridden so much.

(Ok, I just made up that last one to scare you! So don't worry about it)

G: With my GSXR I do often effectively use it as a scooter with a clutch in town.

Why do people go into neutal when stopping at lights? I've never had that habit, car or bike.
