Bar Wobble?

Not rode my bike for a while, did a 300+ mile journey and on the way decided to take my hands off the bars.

This is when I noticed the bars starting to wobble side to side then starting to become more violent. I can feel it starting when loosely holding the bars also, didn't notice it particularly when accelerating, braking or cornering though.

Any idea what the problem could be?

The road was smooth and I tried it on a few anyhow, the tyre pressure had been checked that morning and when I got home, this happened under engine braking (well 6th gear 'coasting' down a gentle hill).

Have you checked your steering head bearings for notches? i.e. front wheel off the ground, turn steering from lock to lock slowly. Should move freely and not 'bind' or feel rough or 'notch' where it would stick in one place. Other than that it might just be normal 'tank slapper' stuff which your bike might be prone to.

Got a top box ?
Or had some heavy weight on the rear of the bike on that trip.

Also check the rear end for loose bearings. Many a front wobble are cause by something at the back.

Hi

Steering head bearings would be my first guess. But can easily be loads of other things. Check tyre pressures, wheel balance, fork seals, play in the rear suspension linkages, rear shock, etc.

Not sure if it the same thing,

I had the same problem last year on the M1 going to cornwall. I over took a truck doing well over 00mph with a mate following me. Just as I hit the turbulance I felt the bike have a slight wobble and decided to power on. 1/2 mile later the bike was everywhere with me struggling to keep it up let alone in my lane.

I late found that it was due to the wind going over my head, down my back and hitting my rather over loaded tote bag and causing the front to lift slightly which when I started to wobble the front wheel was bearly touching the floor.

Try spread your weight or take the bike out with no box and do the same.

Definitely the top box. I used to get the same on my Diversion when I put heavy stuff in the top box.

Another cause of bar wobble I’ve had was when Chiswick Honda managed to warp a brand new rear disk on my CBR600, but that tended to wobble under acceleration rather than coasting.

on piaggios when a top box is fitted heavier bar end weight are fitted aswell... dunno if this applies to all bikes but cud be a cure as a noticeable difference if felt with these

+1 on a warped disk.

When i let go of the bars i got a wobble from the bars, but like other folk said it could be fork seals or a weight has fallen of the wheel?
