A couple of bits of been there, done that advice.
1. The important one. Keep the RXS. Keep it forever. It's more or less worthless, and the sort of bike you could never make a profit on it. If you sell it I can guarantee that you'll look back in 5-10 years and think, "I miss my RXS, why did I sell it for £200". I have similar sentiments towards my first CB250RSA.
2. You are mechanically inept. I assume you're 17. You may not yet have realised your ineptitude, but it is strong. There will be mechanically adept BCFers near you who will quite happily come along and spend a sunday helping you out and chatting shit about bikes as long as you provide plenty of tea and biscuits, and providing fags is polite. Don't be a cocky shite, but don't be scared to ask. If I lived near I'd be over on sunday with tools, a welder and experience.
3. None of the things wrong with it are difficult or expensive to fix, they need time and patience and preferably experience.
A fork seal can be done properly in half an hour, but change both. You don't need expensive fork oil, I chuck in either ATF or 10W40 motor oil. Whichever is in my garage and cost me the least.
A blob of weld (on steel) is free from someone with a welder. If it's alloy then you need someone with aluminium MIG wire, which we don't all keep a spool of (I do).
Fuel tank can be brazed or chemical metalled, again you need prep and patience. Tank needs to be empty and dry, which means emptying it and leaving it somewhere vaguely warm to evaporate the dregs. The metal around the hole needs sanding back to bring metal before applying chemical metal or brazing.
Indicator wires should be on the indicators and the wiring loom. Again, sorting is easy. You need a wiring diagram (in the haynes) a soldering iron, connectors/crimps/shrinkwrap to do a good join and lots of patience. Wiring diagrams need to be traced very carefully, then double checked to make sure you're looking at the right wire. Being impatient or impulsive will mean mistakes, and if you're the kind of person who gets angry you'll end up breaking something. Anger has no place near bike maintenance.
You may be able to get an MOT without indicators.
So find a local BCFer to give you a hand. Bear in mind that if you come across as an irritating little bastard they'll never help you again. So far the bike has cost you next to nothing - wait for my CB250RSA restoration thread to see how you can spend on a bike for an equally unimpressive result - and is practically roadworthy. |

The RXS is one of the simplest bikes ever made and probably the easiest to work on of any I've owned (165 or so different models to date). They are worth spending a few quid on to sort properly as they will give years of reliable service.
Should have stuck with the original indicators (and indeed the original everything non-consumable).
The wiring is very easily fixed/bodged/
I've had a leaky right hand fork seal for five years - but it's never worsened to a point that it won't pass an MOT with a bit of tissue secreted under the seal cover
Footrests are easy to come by but you should be able to get yours welded for peanuts. ____________________ The RXS100: vehicle of choice for Chuck Norris |

Also I take no responsibility for any bad things that come from this, but if you pull your dust seal up and stuff some old rag or tissue inbetween the dust seal and oil seal it will stop the leak from showing It will get you through an MOT if needs be.

Pub/club work
Im doing 9-6 or 12-9, 5 days a week at the moment, and im still looking to get extra work around that to fund my next bike
Means having next to no social life for a while but that will probably help with saving money to be honest. ____________________ I am a bellend, I am a man of constant sorrow, I am a gummy bear, I am a rock. |
