Something I noticed a little while ago and it came up in conversation again yesterday. Are bike values/Prices on the up?

I've been looking for projects/ commuter bikes and a Hornet like I sold 2 years ago seams to be fetching similar if not more money than they were at that time.
A friend who wrote his bike off in september is looking to replace it with the same and has said that the same age/millage is now 4-600 quid more than he paid this time last year.

What's going on?!

No I'm talking long term, over the last 2 years, bike that are now 1-2 years older are going for more than they did 1-2 years ago.

Hi

They definitely seem to have gone up. Keep an eye on Bimota prices and 2 years ago an SB6R would normally go for around £4k, now they are going for about £6k.

Suspect it is because new bikes have rocketed in price that 2nd hand ones have become more sought after and so gone up in price. Add to that plenty of 2nd hand bikes being exported leading to a reduction in supply.

We have gained from having a hideously over valued pound for quite a few years. Think prices are just going back to a more normal level.

All the best

Keith

As I said elsewhere; yes.
The KTM I bought new a couple of years ago now costs 20% more. New models are coming on the market at even higher premiums.
This is all going to push up the second price, as more people go second hand.

I'm glad I've relatively happy with my current 'fleet', though unfortunately it's unlikely any I've got to sell will have appreciated in value Sad.

I've noticed this too. I'm looking at selling my bike soon and buying another so i have been watching bike prices for a while, they have certainly gone up a bit (or at least not dropped any)

Ebay in particular seems to have very highly priced bikes Confused

I agree. There's lots of imaginatively priced stuff on ebay though, and a large proportion of it isn't selling.

The classified on ebay shows a lot of over priced bikes, but some I have been watching have dissapeared before their time was up so I can only presume they have sold.

Used bike prices are silly.

I went to my local bike shop and they had the busa I really want in their 2nd hand dept. The 2008 in midnight blue with gold wheels Cool

I asked how much £7500 says he Shocked Shocked Shocked

I only paid £6900 for my 2007 brand new (pre reg)

Bugger, I really want that bike, but not at that money.

I've kept an eye on RR prices for the last few years. Normally they depreciate a lot in year 1 (to the tune of £1.5-2k), year two they loose a little more - say another £1k or or so.

Year 3 though, the loss is tiny as is year 4 and 5.

Looking at it, I think i'll keep my RR indefinately.

I was thinking of swapping to an 848 but used and new prices have got fairly ridiculous now so I'm not overly bothered right now.

i thought prices were down maybe im just lucky
i bought a p reg rf600 a couple of weeks ago £200 needed fork seals
k reg blade £500 needed tyres and down pipes
l reg xj600 £100 needed a seat
all being broken for parts but all could have been moted cheaply
maybe its just old bikes down but hey i can live with that

One reason the manufactuers might increase the price of new bikes over the years is to keep the people who buy new happy as they lose less when they come to sell. An example would be the ninja 250r, in 08 it started at 3399 and over the last two years it has rose to 3999, therefore you see people trying to sell their 08 ones for 3000, as to people who are buying it seems good value as it is a grand cheaper than a new one. So losing 400 quid over two years isn't to bad considering the warranty will be finished and it includes the initial big depreciation from riding it out of the showroom.

must be an affect of the weak pound.. if you want an eye opener look on the german equivalent of autotrader www.mobile.de, find some bikes like yours and then convert to pounds at todays rate 1 pounds = 1.10 euros

which is why it's getting more common for expats out here to export a bike from the uk

If it's just the exchange rate driving price increases then Triumph are being very opportunistic. In 2008 the Street Triple was £5299. in 2009 it was ~£6k, and the 2010 price is £7k.

So much for made in Britain giving price stability (and before anyone says it, I doubt very much it's significantly due to materials price increases).

The whole new bike market seems to be catching up on 15 years of minimal/zero inflation, and that's pushing SH values up on line.

I thought very little of Triumphs were actually made in the UK?

Engines, frames and assembly isn't it. The rest is imported.

Hi

With Triumph, a lot of their components are sourced from outside the UK. Brakes, fuel injection, chains, tyres, etc. All these items have gone up.

Also, in many cases prices are not set by what an item costs but rather at what the marketing department think they can get away with (although the item might be designed to a cost that gives them a profit). With competition prices increasing the market will stand an increase.

All the best

Keith
