My new grips came today and I can't bloody put them on! I can get it about 1/2 way then it's too hard to move.

Is there a way of putting the grips on like using some water or something?

Heat them up, if you have a airing cupboard or something, even pooring hot water over them would make them softer and easier to deal with.

check youve got them the right way around, one has a larger ID for the throttle body, fitting the left grip on the right doesnt work too well. also as said hairspray, lubes em up to get em on and dries sticky so they dont fall off.

Cheers
John

I soaked mine in rubbing alcohol which evaporates off after they've slipped on.

If you have an airline you can use the blowgun thing and a penny washer as a spacer if needed.

You blow air down the open end of the grip whilst pushing it on and blocking the other end of the bars.

Sounds complicated but the air expands the grip and it slips on, once you have the knack it's easy.

Thouroughly clean bar/throttle tube.
Bowl of boiled water.
Submerge new grips.
Leave for a min.
Shake excess out of grips.
Slide on.
Wipe grips.
Ready to ride in 5.

Always worked better than hairspray for me.

I used the boiling water trick and it worked....only to find out the grips are short!! Mad

On the left it doesn't look too bad but on the throttle side you can see about 1/2 inch of the throttle. Any ideas? Crying or Very sad

On all bikes there is a small gap between the end of the grip and the block of switches etc. (Throttle side) But 1/2 inch like you say is abit on the large side. If it were me i'd live with them for abit and then source some OEMs/Genuine when i was flush.
The softer of the rubber types will stretch abit so maybe try twisting them clockwise abit more.
The kettle of boiled water is again your friend with this task Smile

Probably a bit late
But if you lube the grips, the odds are they`ll stay slightly slippy.
Compressed air is ideal for getting grips on/off.
Ideally you need a mate with a compressor, but basically just loosen the bond of the grip with a screwdriver, then shove the metal tip of an airline into the end of the grip, try & get the tip of the airline between the grip and handle bar, with air pressure the grip will be like the end of a balloon your letting the air out of, flapping around. While this is happening, pull the grip off.
fitting the new grip ............. push it on slightly to line it up, apply compressed air and push on. Once in place stop, the grip should be fixed onto the bar because the joint in between them is dry

I managed the mallet technique getting the grips onto a mountainbike some years ago... as well as burring the opposite end, and gouging a chunk out of the garage wall where the other end of the bar was "resting" Rolling Eyes LOL

It's totally counter-intuitive, but I always use (a light spray of) WD40 on mine. Works fine, to the extent where I've done it and then gone offroading half an hour later.

Much easier than compressed air guns and the like Thumbs Up

I swill some thinners around inside them , turn upside down over the bin to empty the excess , fit the grip and with in a few mins the grip is solid, I like this way as it means you are able to reposition them properly (mostly good for motorcross grips with the extra ribbed part for your fingers)

I used to do that, which is why I now own a large rubber mallet...
