Right I just changed the oil (simple for some). The oil that came out was black and the stuff I put in is clear. Bit scared to turn the engine on incase the bike explodes or something. The oil I put in was 15W40 shell motorcycle oil but the haynes manual says 10w40, is this a biggy or can the bike deal with it?

Well it came out black because it is old and dirty, I am not sure of what you can get away with, but if it is too thick it could cause the gearbox to seize. Start it up and ride it to see what it feels like, the weather is warmer also so you won't have to worry about the oil taking longer to warm up.

i'd go with 10w40, the numbers as far as i remember is a temperature range, and 10w40 is best for the climate of the UK, i shouldnt think it would be a huge worry tho, especially not as this time of year

but stick with 10w40 in the future, its just as easy to find

That'll be fine in the bros. It just means that when the oil is warm is behaves as a 15 weight oil not as a 10 weight oil.

bigger number = heavier weight = thicker oil.

A heavier, thicker oil is slower to respond and harder to squeeze up and down narrow oilways - so if you had very narrow oilways to the head for instance, and you were using a very thick oil, you would wear camshaft its surroundings out pretty fast becuase it would be lacking lubrication.

However, both bros lumps are tough engines, the oilways are plenty wide, and seeing as the oil lubricates well enough when its behaving as a 40 weight oil at low temperature, its going to be fine behaving as a 15 weight oil at high temp.

Cheaper oil generally has a smaller temperature span, such as 15W40 in this case. More expensive (synthetic) oil generally has a bigger temperature span - such as mobil 1 doing 0W40. That means it will give better protection over a wider range of temperatures.

Hi

It should be fine. The numbers are the effective oil weight when cold and when hot. The 15w40 will flow slightly slower when the engine is cold, but once hot it will flow just the same as 10w40.

All the best

Keith

Im too used to 50cc two stroke oil buying. Just went down, brought first relatively good looking oil that werent too extravagent but werent budget (2 x 1litre mobil semi synthetic stuff) and an oil filter. Nothing better after wearing in the new piston ring, altho as i have only dont 300 miles i imagine there is still a tad to go. But since it rides like its run in (VERY free revving) i assume all is kocher. But its like a new bike. Best 15 quid spent in my opinion.

Cant believe people get garages to do it, besides from the saving you make, you can monitor the grade of oil going in.

And yes the oil that comes out is bloody disgusting (and very very staining) but if you put it in old bottles, you have petty vandalism sorted if someone pisses you off in the near future. Oh and it burns as well as (homemade) napalm if you get it started (has a high Ea but put some petrol/white spirit in with it.... Twisted Evil

Plus (i believe) it kills grass quite efficiently. Oil scarred messages are always cool.
