Unforunately yes (only 3rd party)

I know someone who is driving around in a scooby with all the stage bells and whistles.
Technically he OWNS a fiesta with fully comp any car insurance. Hes got the v5 and insurance in his mums name as she has years and years of no claims. must seem odd to the insurance company telephone staff when a 50 odd year old woman is insuring a staged scooby Laughing

Good little loop hole but be careful you don't wanna smash the bike with only 3rd party insurance.

Also worth noting some insurance companys only allow the any car policy come into effect if your over 21.

Best to check

So while he thinks he's saving money, should he crash it he will be well out of pocket.... and car less.... Especially if his mum say's you are not claiming as she would lose the NCB....

Scams like this often come back to haunt people.

Wouldn't advise it myself.

The last time I rode someone else bike, I dropped it doing about £400 worth of damage and that was at 1mph. Riding other bikes is only 3rd party.

Don't know about you, but i bet most people never intend to crash....
Only takes a split second to turn that £ saving a massive loss...

Remember that if you have one, you may get away with it.... Have a 2nd and the Ins co will be digging a lot harder to avoid a payout.

this is completely different as you are only insured 3rd party and the vehicle is insured legally by someone else.

I'd be very careful about this. Third party cover on other vehicles often comes with a number of clauses. When you get your new paperwork have a close read of the T&Cs.

Typically it does not apply to other vehicles within your household or vehicles that you know you'll be riding regularly. Basically, it's there to cover you should you need to drive/ride a vehicle that isn't your own; it's not there to cover you for vehicles you know you're likely to be riding/driving - for those you can be expected to put yourself down as a named driver.

If you're involved in an accident or even just stopped and checked by the police, and they see that you're not a named rider on that bike, they'll very carefully check your policy and that you're not in breach of the insurance company's T&C before they consider letting you on your way.

Do what i do, me and my old fella have the same name, and we never fill out the DOB section on the log books, so insuring each others bikes isnt that difficult.

"is your name on the log book sir"
"it certainly is"

But turning 22 i now have entitlement to ride any bike tpo, so i ride them anyway.

in the future if any bike was overly expensive for me to insure TPO, id insure it in his name as hes over 50 and insurance is very cheap, then ride it on my policy.

simples.

Do you have evidence for this?
You see I was in an accident where there was a claim and I had third part cover - not even a blink of an eye. It was a vehicle in my household - though I should point out the situation was entirely 'legitimate' - presumably they didn't know this.

Some people make a lot more effort than others to not crash, it tends to be latter ones that don't Smile.

Also, for younger people claiming on fully comp insurance is often not worth it - the loss of policy, no claims and five years worth of admitting a claim can often cost more than just fixing your bike.
I certainly don't have FC on all my vehicles (infact my van may be the only one, despite being worth not too much these days.)
[Edit, seems he already covered this before most posted.[/edit]

My insurance gives me the ability to ride any other bike TPO.

I did it with the Thundercat, my Dad insured it for about £50 but I just rode it TPO.

Problem is, it's such a big fiddle that if anyone were to find out you'd be in for it I imagine.

I'd check on the traders insurance, might be something in there that precludes third party cover on personal policies.

Business insurance is a wee bit different from private insurance.

To the 'just don't crash' argument? Sods law, you know you'll go out tomorrow and prang it.

Didnt think you could do that, every insurance company i rang said they wont cover me on other 3rd party bikes until at least 21 years old

Well the police aren't particularly interested in any claim, but they would be interested in the validity of your insurance.

I can speak from personal experience in so far as I was stopped about 4 months ago on a friends bike having done an illegal U turn. It was about 11pm and dead on the roads so the officer was happy just to issue a warning (being polite helped), but was nonetheless very sure to check thoroughly that the terms of my third party cover was valid on that bike. Were it another vehicle in my household (assuming they are exempt), I'm fairly sure there would have been a good chance the officer would have dug a little further and potentially pulled me up on it.

I've also (sadly!) seen a few of those police action programmes where officers have seized vehicles for exactly that offence - invalid third party other vehicle cover. They're always very keen to check the conditions of third party cover where drivers are not named, to the extent that they'll telephone brokers to check. There's a good chance you wouldn't get away with it if there are such clauses in your policy as mentioned earlier.

Being 21 or 25 seems to be a common theme when 'riding other bikes'.
Except I have a policy on NIG through bikesure and I have riding other bikes TPO insurance and I am 19.
I have checked and checked and checked and it definitely applies to me. The only one I have found that does it though and it was when NIG had just started underwriting bike insurance I think.
Will see if I can keep it on renewal.

Interesting - I suppose they've decided there's some 'quick wins' to get some more tallies on their league table.

It is fronting if you are the owner and main user of the vehicle, even if it is legally insured by another party. It is still illegal.
