Some of you with good memories may vaguely remember a thread I started on here a couple of weeks ago (Monday 21st June to be exact) asking if RAC membership was worth it.

You might also recall that after getting your feedback I cancelled my membership renewal.

Today I looked at my bank statement and the bastards have taken the 86 quid anyway.

Just been on the phone to them and although the chap I spoke to says he has now *definitely* cancelled the membership, he said it would take 14 days to refund the fee!

Am currently waiting for someone to ring me back...

Evil or Very Mad

did you cancel the direct debit yourself at the bank after you cancelled the membership? That's what I usually do, then they can't take money from you even if they try...

It wasn't a direct debit but done on my debit card, which unfortunately is still the same one I had this time last year...

EDIT: actually just rechecked and my debit card was renewed October last year so the debit was actually done using an expired card!

I love the way companies will take your money there and then but when you want a refund

"Oh sorry sir but we have procedures and its not my department........."

Meanwhile your money is sat making them money. Now £86 isn't much but you won't be the only refund waiting......

As for taking the £86 after you've cancelled it with an expired card thats jut plain cheeky.

The chap from the RAC has just phoned me back. He said he'd been round to the finance department and they'd 'try to hurry the refund along' but it would still be the end of next week.

When I asked to speak to someone in the finance department directly he said they don't take calls.

Arrrghhh! I hate call centres! Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

Anyway have now reported it to my bank as a fraudulent transaction.

I get similarly annoyed with the tax system. They go on about catching people committing fraud, and making sure everyone pays tax - which is fair enough really - but they also must have a lot of cases where they take too much tax. The system is so complex that I bet there are loads of people paying too much (I have been, I know people I worked with who were) and yet to get the money *back* from them is a mammoth task! It works one way and not the other Rolling Eyes

That's amazing they took it from an expired card and it still went through.. I'd complain to the bank about that!

I think that just because the card has been renewed it does not make it a fraudulent transaction. The account number on the card will have stayed the same, just the issue or expiry date that will have changed. The account details will remain exactly the same. As all the debit card was doing was giving a transaction out of your bank account, then just repeating the process a year later will do the same. They have you details on file and will just use them automatically for a renewal. Same thing happens with insurance if you choose not to cancel the policy.

As izzi said, you should have cancelled the debit instruction at the bank, they couldn't have taken it then.

Don't even get me started on the Right Arseholes Company.....sorry RAC Laughing

There useless, I tried to cancel mine this year but they took the payment out anyway so I just decided to stay with em instead.

Even when you do use them they fail to turn up or not have a clue with bikes!

Bloody waste of £129 it was!

Going back with the AA next year though!

I think when I got my new debit card the 16 digit number across the middle had changed if I remember correctly.

Don't even mention the tax system. I don't even earn enough to pay NI yet I paid tax on my savings despite completing an R85, now I have a long form to fill in to get it back!

The number across the middle on my HSBC switch card didn't change.

All that changes is the issue and expiry date.

Strange? I've been a member of the RAC for nearly 10 years now, lost count of the amount of times they've saved my sorry ass! Including picking up my burnt out Honda CBR and transporting it and me back home and placing it on my drive no questions asked! And like the time one of their bods drove around for nearly an hour with me and my bike at 2am just so he could find a garage that sold tyre weld for me! Maybe i've just been lucky?
Sorry just thought i would add this as you may have mis judged them Neutral

I have RAC membership, for 6 months (free Smile ).

Needed to use them once as my radiator was rather rotten and developed a large hole.

For free, I couldn't complain. Arrived after 15 minutes. Thumbs Up

A 4 hour wait at the side of the road when they "forgot" I called them, despite me ringing them every hour, tends to put me off the RAC.

Did I mention that this was a joint policy with Charlottes, linked to the disabled badge she had and was meant to be a priority service?

All the best

I remember a nice cold day last november when My bike broke down on a busy dual carriage way and they left me waiting for 2 hours for a Patrol Vehicle!
And when he told me he couldn't fix it I had to wait a futher 1 and a half hours for a low loader to come and get me!

Useless asses they are!

The card number and expiry date (obviously) of my debit card were changed when it was renewed. The person I spoke to at the bank agreed that the transaction shouldn't have gone through "although it can happen". There is no procedure for cancelling an annual debit card instruction as there is with a direct debit.

But irrespective of all that, I called the RAC on the 21st of June and cancelled my membership. To then take the money out of my account IS a fraudulent transaction.

To be fair to the RAC the person I spoke to today agreed that they'd made a mistake. What really got me annoyed was that they said it would take 14 days to put it right, and there was nobody prepared to speak to me about that. If somebody had picked your pocket and you'd caught them in the process you wouldn't expect the thief to say "fair cop guv, I'll give you your wallet back in a fortnight".

If I were the cynical sort (er, I am), I might be tempted to think the RAC had a deliberate policy to ignore a customer's first request to cancel their membership... Thinking

Has this happened to anyone else?

Yep, it happened to us too - took bloody ages to convice them that I had cancelled. They kept writing to me saying that 'we have been unable to take the money from your accout - if you don't pay us soon you won't be covered', funny that - I'd cancelled the direct debit!

To end (?) this story, just thought I'd report that this morning I received, via snail mail, a cheque from the RAC for 86 quid.

No cover letter or apology or anything, just a cheque, a bit bizzare but at least I've got my money back.
