Some of you with good memories may vaguely remember a thread I started on here a couple of weeks ago (Monday 21st June to be exact) asking if RAC membership was worth it.
You might also recall that after getting your feedback I cancelled my membership renewal.
Today I looked at my bank statement and the bastards have taken the 86 quid anyway.
Just been on the phone to them and although the chap I spoke to says he has now *definitely* cancelled the membership, he said it would take 14 days to refund the fee!
Am currently waiting for someone to ring me back...

did you cancel the direct debit yourself at the bank after you cancelled the membership? That's what I usually do, then they can't take money from you even if they try... ____________________ "The problem with the French is they have no word for 'entrepreneur' " George W Bush

I love the way companies will take your money there and then but when you want a refund
"Oh sorry sir but we have procedures and its not my department........."
Meanwhile your money is sat making them money. Now £86 isn't much but you won't be the only refund waiting......
As for taking the £86 after you've cancelled it with an expired card thats jut plain cheeky. ____________________ Suzuki RF 600 - The two wheeled Testarossa (Deceased)

The chap from the RAC has just phoned me back. He said he'd been round to the finance department and they'd 'try to hurry the refund along' but it would still be the end of next week.
When I asked to speak to someone in the finance department directly he said they don't take calls.
Arrrghhh! I hate call centres!
Anyway have now reported it to my bank as a fraudulent transaction. ____________________ "It's all about dislocating expectation"

I think that just because the card has been renewed it does not make it a fraudulent transaction. The account number on the card will have stayed the same, just the issue or expiry date that will have changed. The account details will remain exactly the same. As all the debit card was doing was giving a transaction out of your bank account, then just repeating the process a year later will do the same. They have you details on file and will just use them automatically for a renewal. Same thing happens with insurance if you choose not to cancel the policy.
As izzi said, you should have cancelled the debit instruction at the bank, they couldn't have taken it then. ____________________ Colin McRae MBE 1968 - 2007 RIP

Don't even get me started on the Right Arseholes Company.....sorry RAC
There useless, I tried to cancel mine this year but they took the payment out anyway so I just decided to stay with em instead.
Even when you do use them they fail to turn up or not have a clue with bikes!
Bloody waste of £129 it was!
Going back with the AA next year though! |

Strange? I've been a member of the RAC for nearly 10 years now, lost count of the amount of times they've saved my sorry ass! Including picking up my burnt out Honda CBR and transporting it and me back home and placing it on my drive no questions asked! And like the time one of their bods drove around for nearly an hour with me and my bike at 2am just so he could find a garage that sold tyre weld for me! Maybe i've just been lucky?
Sorry just thought i would add this as you may have mis judged them ____________________ Here comes the summer! |

I have RAC membership, for 6 months (free ).
Needed to use them once as my radiator was rather rotten and developed a large hole.
For free, I couldn't complain. Arrived after 15 minutes. |

Join the AA, they took 15 minutes to get to me after i foned, spotted the problem, and spent 3 hours wth me in a horrendous downpour finding somewhere that would helicoil (cos mines an import). Not bad in all.
