Hey y'allll.

Struggling a little with finding a career path at the moment rejection is becoming a little boring.

Recently applied for an apprenticeship at the Atomic Weapons Establishment but that did not go for me so at another path that forks now...

www.computrain-uk.com

I have been looking at this sort of thing for a while now, gain an MCSE qualification whilst in work and ba placed in an IT job afterwards, too good to be true obviously so it costs 2.5k but if they cannot find a placement they will refund that money.

I already have a 2 A levels in Computing so it shouldn't be too much of a difficult leap...

How much are these qualifications worth in real world?

Also, always being a big option for me is armed forces career...

More specifically the Royal Air Force but being a bit gay would rather stay in my hometown due to gf and parents, comfort sort of thing.

Has anyone had any experiences with computrain or similar computer training companies?

Thanks for any replies and LeeR if you could sling me ya number again it would be nice to talk to you about it you old sex pest.

Jack Thumbs Up

Hi,

The placement can be anywhere for any wage so are often such you dont want to accept them and then can't claim the money back.
For some jobs they are worth having but look around at the number of jobs in your area and what they are paying.
It is also possible to self study for these exams which may work out cheaper.

If you dont know what to do I would look at jobs that mean you do something that can't be outsourced. Electrican, plumber and so on qualified they can earn very good money and you can earn on the job.
Regards
C

Computrain has expert experience in identifying the best funding method including grants that don't need to be paid back - and a short chat with us can help you decide how to pay for your training. The options below highlight a few of the funding methods available:

A low interest loan?

Computrain can arrange a low interest loan, with flexible payment terms to cover the cost of your training. Repayments of the loan typically won't start till after your course - by then we should have found you a job. At Computrain we handle the entire loan application process for you - just fill in the forms and we'll do the rest.

A simple example: A candidate borrowed £1,000 for their course - over 3 years the repayments were just over £7.50 a week. Consider that your first IT job will initially pay you up to £550 a week, repayments to your loan shouldn't be a problem.

It may make sense for you to cover the cost of your training. Paying by debit or credit card is the quickest way to register and the investment in yourself could be paid back in a short space of time.

Funny that in there, the only mention is A LOAN VIA THEM AND PAY YOURSELF.....
Not as in the 1st paragraph which mentions grants.....

In other words they are a private company looking to make a profit. Read their speel and after you have passed its all about their sister companies......
Not about getting placements with real companies.

I would take a look at local collage courses that maybe avaiable to a lot less cost. Or talk to some local computing companies and what they would advise as a good path.

Do a google of their placement co. CompuCareers
Funny not one hit on a site....
But plenty of other stuff you need to read.....

IMO MS qualifications are almost valueless and companies that sell them with a promise of a career are thieves.

IT support (i.e everything that isn't development) is a strange industry. The easy way in is to start on a 'helpdesk' (NOT a call centre), but once their it can be very, very difficult to move on (some people never do). Having certificates doesn't make this step much easier, having the right attitude does.
And then, even if you manage to work your way up in one company, it doesn't always translate into a step up within the industry.
The only way to really guarantee a step up is to get experienced in industry standard kit (hardware/software) and ideally back it up with some certification.

Put it this way, if I was interviewing for an entry level job, MS qualifications would be very low on the list, the stuff you learn on these courses is at a level that you simple won't be involved in until you have a good few years experience.
If it was for a role that was at a higher level and was MS orientated then they'd be slightly more valuable but previous experience would be more important as would attitude (no empire-builders thanks).

The only IT-esq qualifications I've ever seen create a career right from the out-set are those for developers. That's not to say it works for everyone but it's had the highest success rate I've seen.

Have a search, someone posts on here asking about careers advice every month. Always wanting to work in IT and considering the armed forces or police, because kids have fuck all imagination.

Find a careers advisor and talk to them. I don't know where you find one, you'll have to find out for yourself.

Careers advisors generally for younger folks anyway, tend to toe the government line about going to university and all that jazz, as it keeps people off the unemployment stats!

Ive been to careers advisors, AFCO's all sorts and all I seem to get is conflicting information everytime.

Ive applied for the forces a couple of times before and am not really at the stage where I am considering it, more which path to go down but thanks for your input anyway robby.

I wanted to ask more specifically whether anyone has had any experience in the computrain path and whether it is a con or not basically which I believe it is having already googled the seemingly non existant sister company...

Hi,

if you are desperate for ideas on what you might be good out you try Strengths Finder or one of the equivalents.
I would not say they are the be all and end all but they can give you some new ideas.

The exams are ~£88 + VAT to sit. You need 7 for an MCSE, 3? MCSA and 1 to be an MCP. If you really want to to do them get Testout via torrent to practice. If you can get 60% in a testout exam you will pass. Testout also offer a "guaranteed" pass if you can get 95% in the mock exams, which you probably won't.

Having an MCSE will make dick all difference in getting most jobs, will help little in the job itself and cost you the best part of £600.

The companies you mention are all sharks, just do a search. Find something other than IT while you're at it Thumbs Up

IT in this country is dead - well, more specifically any roles earning decent money are dead or dying. The "much quickness, plenty cheapness" brigade have seen to that!
