Book says:

Primary coil resistance 3.4 - 4.6 Ohms
Secondary (main) coil resistance 10.4-15.6 K Ohms

Multimeter says:

Primary coil resistance 2.3 Ohms
Secondary (main) coil resistance 25 K Ohms (probe inside plug cap)
Secondary (main) coil resistance 13.5 K Ohms (probe in bare end of HT lead)

Just checking this is far enough out of spec for coil to be fucked?

No spark on the machine, and the earth is being pulsed properly by the TCI as evidenced by leccy screwdriver.

You should ignore the reading through the cap - what it's probably showing you is that you have a resistive (interference suppression) cap on it. You could maybe check for a spark just with a bit of thick wire jammed into the ht lead as such a cap will diminish your spark somewhat. On that note, you should possibly measure to the actual coil because the HT lead may be resistive as well.

I've rarely found a coil to be entirely in spec - my personal theory being that the figures quoted in manuals are readings taken with big sod-off shop ohmeters that put enough current through the coil for it to have an effect on the resistance. I have absolutely no proof of this though!

Anyhoo, The secondary is in spec and the first is just a bit out - I would have though it would have been close enough to make some kind of spark, coils are quite hard to break. What's happened, has the spark just randomly vanished or has there been something else going on?

The bike was running fine, then started cutting out in the wet which lead my mate to put it away for about a month. We tried to start it a few days ago and after a lot of failed bumping found it had no spark.

With the coil unplugged, and the clip attached to the frame/ground, the probe lit up when touched to the coil's positive feed.

Then with the clip attached to the battery positive the probe lit up in short pulses when attached to the coil negative (controlled by the TCI) and the engine cranked.

From this there is definitely some pulse of some description leaving the TCI, so I there should be some sort of spark, even if the spark timing was wrong for whatever reason.

I did try the end of the spark-plug in the HT lead with no cap but that didn't give some much as a flicker either. Sad

The problem with Coils, is even if they test right then cans till break down underload. Kept an eye out for one on ebay also get a new ht lead/cap

Are you remembering the side stand safety switch?

My SRX didn't have one. Mainly as it was kick start only, and starting it on the side stand was alot easier. SRX's tend to vibrate alot which could well have cracked the coil and allowed water in.

so far, pretty inconclusive! Seen as it was dying when wet, I'd want to be sure that all the ht stuff downward of the coil (the lead, the cap and the plug itself) were ok before spending hard-earned on a new coil. You can replace the whole lot with a bit of mains cable discharging onto the engine casing.

Ah right, not an SRX600 then. I wish people would state what bike it's for, makes things a bit easier Wink

Thats what mine was, though it was the older import one without electric start. Your right though, the newer ones probably do have a side stand switch. Mine used to cut out in the wet too but i assumed it was a mixture problem from me fiddling with the carb to try to get a bit more out of it Laughing

I miss mine Sad

get hold of another coil. Only realy way to rule it out. Any 12v TCI single lead col should do the trick. Car coil would also no doubt work.

Also clean your plug as repeatedly trying to start it has probably fouled the plug.

I've got a GS 500 coil around in one of my spares boxes, I'll give that a go.

The SRX4 coil has an integral HT lead so if the HT lead is fucked it means the coil is scrap Sad
