...playing with a pop can stove. If I use an aluminium camping kettle instead of my stainless steel teapot, I can get half a pint boiled in 4:40 on 10ml of meths. As usual, I'm more fixated on economy than speed
I'm going to have a bash at a side burner, but using the "roll-in" method of making the inner wall, like this :-

Although I think I'm going to crush an awful lot of cans before I get something usable ____________________ Chances are quite high you are not in my Monkeysphere, and I don't care about you. Don't take it personally.

Trangia FTW.
Only ever had a problem once with a Trangia, got a bit too messy at Glastonbury, lost all my stuff and had to clean it with a 3 day worn sock ____________________ Don't practice it until you get it right, practice it until you don't get it wrong.

Today I have been mostly...
...putting out a small fire I started in the kitchen
I made a side burner from a single can complete with inner wall, and it was doing quite well until I knocked it over when taking the pot off, spreading burning meths all over the floor. Good job I had already presoaked a towel, "just in case"
I will go up in the loft and harvest some fibre glass insulation for the Mk 4. ____________________ Chances are quite high you are not in my Monkeysphere, and I don't care about you. Don't take it personally.

Only twice. Any more than that and they take ages and the water gets cold
I have a Trangia winging its way to me courtesy of Yen Powell (mucho grats), but since the wife is away and I still have my eyebrows, I had a bash at Stinkwheel's stove using a tin of sweetcorn. It's the same diameter as a pop can, but about an inch shorter and made from steel, rather than aluminium. This makes it a bit more sturdier, but may have an effect on the vapourising of the fuel - I'll have to wait to get some more cans before I can compare.
https://www.bikechatforums.com/download.php?id=71465
The bottom holes are about an inch up, meaning it can hold 30ml of meths max. This gives a 10 minute burn, which is enough to boil a pint of water, or one mug and fry some eggs It's not particularly windy in my kitchen (although the tile floor is freezing and there's a nice draught coming in from under the dishwasher) but it'll be better with a windshield using it in the great outdoors. When the rain stops for long enough I'll move out into the garden for some decent testing, in the meantime I'll carry on scaring the cat in the name of science ____________________ Chances are quite high you are not in my Monkeysphere, and I don't care about you. I love this thread, 'tis made of the purest win.
Not only do we have slightly dangerous budget cooking methods shown in great detail but with the added danger of using them indoors...
Made my evening.
/am pretty jealous as I haven't messed about with fire for years. Plus I want to attend some rallies this year so how will I make tea.......??? ____________________ NSR125RR - ZXR750H1 - ZX9R E1 - GSF600S - GSF600SK3 - VFR400-NC30 - SV1000N - ST1100-R - CBR900RR-R - GSF1200SK5 - GSF600SK1 - VFR1200FA - GSXR1000K2 - ZZR1400 D8F

Just found this. It's long, but you can fast forward to 7:00 - all you miss is the stove going out 4 or 5 times and the guy adding yet more fuel. And drinking more beer.

So, take one small can of beans, eat the contents, cut a window in the side at the bottom, fold in some tabs, get a tealight, throw away the candle and keep the aluminium tray, gloop in some Tesco value hand sanitiser, put it inside the bean can, fill any old empty soda can with a mug of water, put the soda can into the bean tin so it's resting on the tabs, light the gel.

7 minutes later, you can have a coffee. Doesn't do a rolling boil so won't sterilise pond water, but it's more than hot enough to scald myself with it, and it won't spread like meths does if you knock it over. Doesn't burn with any smoke, doesn't leave any residue on the can, just some nice smelling sticky gloop in the bottom of the tealight tray. ____________________ Chances are quite high you are not in my Monkeysphere, and I don't care about you. Probably get a more consistant burn from these gel firestarters :-

You don't get carbon monoxide from a blue flame. The main risk is setting yourself on fire. Remembering that water (such as that contained in the pot on top of the stove) WILL extinguish burning alcohol is a good plan.
Another thing to try is insulating the stove from the ground. This can make a huge difference.
The most efficient one I've made to-date is the good old penny stove which is perfectly capable of achieving a full rolling boil. They do not spill easily either. I've been using the same one for over 12 months now and I took nothing else to cook with on a 3 day backpacking treck with the girlfriend. I took 500ml of meths and still had a good 100ml left when I got home
https://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f216/stinkwheel/pennystove2.png
I did also make a micro-penny stove using red bull cans. This took a while to boil but only uses 22ml of meths to boil my mug of water. You do need to prime it a little to start with though (like with 2 drops on a piece of tinfoil under the stove).
https://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f216/stinkwheel/Image050.jpg
You need to take care with wind deflectors. I find them problematic with the pressurised and semi-pressurised ones. If it reflects too much heat back, it starts to go into a positive feedback priming cycle and before you know it, you have a flame thrower on your hands.
Apparently those flat capilliary ones made of bean can lids are ultra efficient but they are a fanny to keep going.
Also. I win the nerdy camping stove competition. Mine is super hot, runs on petrol, self-pressurises and is utterly terrifying to light the first few times you try because you have to prime it while holding it in your hand.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKGZuwiRV4Q
If you decide to watch the first attempt where I nearly set fire to my beard, turn the sound down first, it screwed up somehow and came out as white noise. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”
I did the 2010 Round Britain Rally on my 350 Bullet. 89 landmarks, 3 months, 9,500 miles. |
