When overtaking...

...what do you normally do? Generally on NSL roads at about 60mph if there are 2 or more cars ahead and im in 6th, I go down 2 gears to 4th and open the throttle to get past quick. There isnt really enough pull in 6th to get past at that speed. Mirrors and signals too obviously.

Once past the cars and pulled back in kick back into 6th. This is on a Bandit 600, imagine its probably pretty similar for others on 600s?

So, how do you like yours?

I dont overtake I just ride over the top of any cars in front.

On my CG if I wanted to overtake some cars at 60MPH I would wait until I was going downhill (if possible), stay in 5th gear (4th tops out at 65MPH, so I might change down to begin with sometimes).... pin the throttle.... wait 20 seconds to hit somewhere close to 70MPH, pray the engine doesn't explode and then pull back in once I've eventually passed them.

And then most likely just get overtaken again the next time we hit a hill


Or even worse watch the cars just zoom off in to the distance the second I pull out because they can see what I'm trying to do.

Keep it in whatever gear I'm in (usualy top) and roll on/off the throttle as required. I don't find I ever need to put it down a gear to overtake when I'm doing 60mph+ on my gsxr1000. And if I did, I'd imagine it'd be a pretty dangerous overtake.

It all depends on the space available etc.
If it's under 80mph or so and I want maximum go I may well drop it to first with the GSXR.
However, even at 40mph it still has enough go to over take faster than most car can accelerate in gear when it's the bike's in top gear.

Would have to agree with G here. The gear or the car in front is normally pretty irrelevant if I want to get past, quarter turn of the throttle in sixth at 60mph is still pretty impressive, full turn at a ton in sixth is even better though

I think thats probably one of the areas the difference between a 600 and a 1000 can really be seen. Or a 1300 going by your signature

It's still a case of adapting to your situations - do you want all out go (in which case you don't want to choose a generic gear, you want the right one for your speed) or a leisurely cruise past.

Oh and missed zoidburg's post - you put it down a gear or siz so it's not a dangerous overtake .

Depends what bike im on, And what mood im in. What car im following etc.

If I'm on the TZR pit bike, I can overtake up to about 70mph, Then it gets a bit slow, And end up creeping past cars, And looking like a knob.

60mph, and there abouts, I can kick it into 4th, And get a pretty fast overtake.
I make sure to look at the driver im overtaking though, most of the time they have to double take, to make sure what they are seeing is legit!


On the TLR, up to about 70mph, I had a bad habit of clutching it up in second to overtake. Again, Entirely depends on the location.

Around here the roads are too twisty and with too much stuff coming the other way for a standard overtake. I normally drop back a bit before a tight corner, take it faster than them so i'm on the power and along side them 10 meters after the corner if safe to do so. Occasionally i have to slow down pretty quick if theres something coming the other way. If i get it right i can be past someone and back in the correct lane in 2 seconds.

NSL at 60 i'doing about 4k rpm in top, I usually drop it to 4th and make a clean & prompt move. Otherwise, I'd pull back on the throttle and wait a good 1-2 seconds for it to spin up and by 7-8k, it's spinning up nicely and doing 100mph. That's the option I take if there's multiple cars I want to block overtake on a straight road and the opposite lane is clear. I'm normally in the centre of the opposite lane for visibility rather than on the centreline of the road.
