without going into too many details ill just give you the basics

ive cut some tapered parts that will slot onto a shaft. these will be secured with grub screws.
ill be making a frame that has a pair of bearing on either side that the shaft will sit on. ive bought some low friction bearing so everthing should be gravy.

heres so pics of what ive done so far

so all thats left to do on this is drill out and tap for the grub screws and then mill some flats in the shaft so that tightening the grub screws doesnt distort the shaft and then you cant take the parts off. yes it really is that good a fit.

then make the frame. its either going to be an A frame or the shape of an upside down Y. angle iron on the base and T bars for the sides. then mount the bearings and a coat of paint.

swish

are you going to have something between the base of the two A frames to stop the whole thing twisting?

there wont be much room when the wheel is there.

thats why im going to use T bar, as its alot stronger. i could always make the basic frame then put extra legs on the sides going outwards to stiffen it up.

i did think about making it with some sheet bent in the right places to add strength, but at the end of the day the wheel will be sitting on it hardly moving so its not massively imporatant yet.

done a bit more. the whole lot is quite sturdy although i havent finished the welding yet. a last resort for more strength will be a strap between the A frame uprights and then bent around onto the front of the base. but we'll see

next is to finish off the welding, test it again and make sure its still all square. maybe add the extra bits for stregnth or to help straighten it up then paint it. maybe in hammerite black, maybe in lambogini yellow with fire. probably just the black though.

Have you tried just removing the calliper \ chain, and raising the bike with a pair of axle stands under the front forks or under the foot pegs??

It's how I've always done it.

Crack off the axle bolt, Remove calipers /chain.

Have the wheel suspended. The heavy spot will sink to the bottom.

Granted, It wont be as finely balanced as it would on a bearing supported shaft balancer. But I had 170mph out of the TLR, and Indicated over 190mph on the busa. Both bikes had tyres fitted and balanced by myself. Neither bike had any wheel wobble.

everyone has a different view on the best way to do it or maybe just the easiest. the only problem i see with that method is that your relying on the wheel bearings being low friction and clean enough not to cause any interference.

but then again alot of people never balance wheels and never have any trouble.

i just had another excuse to use the lathe Cool
