Scared the shit out of me!

Nice weather so been on the bike loads!

Got my knee down properly on the R6 yesterday and was all full of confidence today.

Anyway, today all was well but had one major tank slapper!

I am used to the front wobbling around under acceleration, but holy crap I shit myself today. Not sure exactly how it happened but was accelerating pretty hard, nothing OTT and the front started shaking around really really violently. It felt like the bars were locking from side to side. I was very very close to just losing it, but managed to straighten it out.

So yeah nice story, but wanted to ask whats the best way to handle this sort of situation? Wrestle the bike back to straighten up? Power out of it?

I tried to be really light on the bars and hope it sorted itself out! I had shut off the throttle though.

Power out of it's the best way. If you put more weight onto it by shutting off it makes them more violent. Loose arms are also good.

In a real life scenario I've never been able to "power" through a tank slapper, instinct is too much and always end up shuttong off the throttle (Apart from when I was racing my sv650 with incorrectly setup front suspension and it would tank slap at the same point on the track every lap ).

Probably caused by a bump in the road at the wrong time

weathers good but still gotta be careful..

i had a great blast after work on tuesday but coming home after dark on some country roads i braked into a corner, hit some gravel that i couldnt see... locked the back wheel, that stepped out, i ended up virtually powersliding round the corner and managed to straighten her back up and carry on shiny side up.. boy that woke me up!!

so yeh, roads and weather is nice but theres still lots of crap on the roads still so keep your wits about you guys

Grip the tank harder with your legs, somewhat reduce your grip on the bars, keep a neutral throttle, if anything slightly accelerating, hope it corrects it's self.

Had that once going under the hangar lane underpass on the A40, proper went into a tank slapper, somehow i kept it upwright, as soon as i realised i was okay i stood up on the pegs no handed and did a kind of victory fist pump in the air in disbelief combined with a big WOOOHOOOOOO

Matt were you pulled up at the North Worcester roundabout at about midday yesterday? If so I was on the back of the Black Fireblade that passed you, was this tank slapper before or after?

I found I had the same thing the first time I got a supermoto, in 3rd, it'd lighten the front and because I was being ham fisted and wrenching on the throttle, it was lifting the front and I was pulling on the rhs bar, meaning the wheel wasn't straight as it came up 2 inches off the ground, then landing not quite straight.

Ahh I thought so, you did look a bit startled you see.. Glad to hear you kept it together though, a big one especially.
The most ferocious that I've experienced was upon landing after cresting a bridge in fladbury, probably about 65~75 mph..
Crap hesitant takeoff and a dodgy return to earth,
don't really know how I managed it but even that was scarey enough.

I don't really know where I'd go from here but if I'd experienced such under acceleration then I too might consider installing a steering damper.

For sure mate FIT A DAMPER, this is normally a problem for thou's but if your well over and give it plenty tank slappers can occur,

I have known of one near me that kicked back at really low speed and broke his wrist. However not so much a slapper as probably more a pothole, but yes loose on the arms and power if you can cos as its been mentioned your instincts will just wanna stop the bike.

Just stick to the rule... Slow in fast out, but keep the power gentle will reduce chance of slappers.

As for being called a "fair weather tit" just cos you had a "tank slapper", well doesnt say much about the mental capacity of some folk. give THAT the attention it deserves ... NONE !

I got an 08 R6 im pretty similer, had the occasional tank slapper with it, but there was this one time when it was realy violent, Just like you described. When it happened to me i just tigthen my knees up keep on the power.

Fit a damper,i had a couple on the Blade and there was no way you could control it,felt like my wrists were broken when it stopped.

If you haven't got a steering damper then a bit of back brake is the way to get out of it.

It happens mostly when the front goes light and it's just skimming over the surface then hits an uneven surface. Easiest thing is to not accelerate so hard

I actually managed to get a tank slapper on video from a trackday I did last year. Hurt my shoulder and even my leg

Does the R6 09 not have a damper by default?

My RR7 has one on as stock. Has been quite handy, when i had the 03 I had a couple on that.

Had a couple of moments on the 07 where it's sort of bounced the front under hard acceleration and not really done much.

They're definatly worth having if you like accelerating to the point of most of the weight being on the back of the back.
