New Member / Just Brought NSR

HEY!
Ok i new to this posting but there seems to be some good advice and alot of people here so i thought i'd join up.
I've recently Brought an NSR125 after alot of research reviews and just personal accounts on them. i know there not the fastest 125 on the market but i think there a good all rounder with good reliability or so i've heard.
But ive noticed on my NSR that it gets very hot and the temp gauge after a while rises into the red. this cannot be normal. And i'm not reving the bollox out of the engine, only up to say 6'000 rpm b4 changing gear as i'm a bit new to all the bike and where its power is.
I stopped the bike to look at the coolent level and managed to top it up. Only to find it was still happening. There was also water over the back swing arm where i think it leaked from the over flow. I cant seem to find any leaks.
Any who i phoned the dealer up and he said if he cant think of something in the next day he'll come down with the trailer and pick it up and fix the problem. Which is nice of him. (Remember he is a dealer....)

Could you know whats up with the bike or how to solve it.
Maybe the pumps a bit dodgy or i might have a small leak somewhere that losing presure and not pumping correctly.

Apart from that i love the bike and is so much better than my old 50cc Speedfight.

Hi

Is the radiator getting hot as well as the engine? If the radiator is cold then the water is not pumping round. This could be a dead water pump, air block, too strong an anti freeze mix or a failed thermostat. If the radiator is hot then the problem is likely to be more serious.

Also, if you overfill the cooling system on some vehicles the system cannot cope with the preasure and bascially doesnt push the water round. However, although you might have overfilled it, it sounds like the bike has managed to dump some water out which would "correct" this problem

lol...I managed to heat up my mate's NSR and make it leak...but I was revving the nuts off it, and *trying* to do burnouts!

If you're getting annoyed with your NSR overheating - look on the bright side - at least you wont freeze in the winter

Thanks for the information i think the radiator is staying cold, it is dumping water but i did notice on the way home it was fine. Temp was all correct but i wasnt reving the crap out of it.
My first idea is that the thermostat is sticking or just completly failed.
If i want to check this i dont have to take the cylinder head of do i?
I can just unscew the top tap?
And remove it to see the thermostat?
I think the radiator is staying cold.

But thanks for the replys. Glad i have somewhere to run to when i dont understand the problem.

Cant the bike overheat from just reving the nuts of it any way?
I dont think it should but its just a question of mine i would like to know.

It shouldnt do, I always rev the tits off mine(Im rarely in the bottom half of the tacho) and thge temp never rises much.
If you were revving it while not moving tho, yeah, it might overheat.

Could a wrong plug cause this?? Or mebbe a wrong air/fuel mix?

I had this issue on an old RK and it turned out to be the head gasket needed replacing! - Only took 10 mins and £5 and hey presto - Bobs you fanny!!!

Not that I am saying your has the same issue but basically the water was passing through to the cylinder (not good!) and burning up (whilst adding a whole lot of other problems). There was also a pressure comming out from the cylinder and pushing the water backwards and out of the overflow - sound familiar?

Hello again, thanx for replys. i just had the dealer phone me up and i explained the problem to him about a day ago and has come back with exactly what lunarcreek said.
Head gasket needs replacing, when you say there where other problems lunarcreek what other problems where there? did this cause the bike not to perform as well?

No - the water going into the cylinder caused issues whilst doing it - but once the gasket was swapped, all was fine!

Issues such as - loss of fluid (obviously) - loss of power - overheating

I assure you - once the gasket is swapped, everything will run smoothly - just get them to check the piston. If eccessive water has got in, you could bend the arm but it isn't very likely.

Cheers for that the dealer has ordered the part though so at least its not a major problem that cant be fixed.
So his paying for it all to be done and fitted, no expense to me ..few..
Apart from that i think the bike is excellent and hope it lasts a good few years with out any other problems.
And if theres more power to come from the 125 engine then woooohooo, i know you probably think thats silly since its only a 125 but when youve just swapped from a 50cc, its a bit of a defierence.

Hi

Head gasket would cause that problem, but I would expect it to use loads of water. Should be easy for the dealer to change the gasket. However, if the bike has run very hot then it can have damaged the piston. Depends on how hot and for how long it was run, but it could have nipped up.

Well hopefully its not caused the barrel or piston any damage. I havent gone on any long rides because of the fear of doing the bike lots of damage. And when it does start to get hot (past 3/4 level) i usually stop the bike and let it cool down before heading of again.
Dont know weather this will actually help but i feel better in doing it.
