Hey all,

I'm off to New York in a couple of weeks. Anyone been there before?

Anyone got any tips of where to go, what to do?

I'm staying on Broadway so should be within walking distances of most places.

Any good motorcycle shops? Clothing etc....

Cheers. Very Happy

watch out for low flying aircraft Rolling Eyes

depends on what you want to do really.
you can get various passes for the busses that do the tourist rounds which is a pretty good way of covering most of the main sites.

didn't see any bike shops as was mainly doing the tourist bit.

New York, concrete jungle where dreams are made of.

I have nothing else to add other than to leave space in your suitcase for all the stuff you will buy!!

Lucky You!! Thumbs Up

I'm about as 'not a city person' as a person could be, but I loved NY - went for a zero birthday and it was fab! Stayed in Time Square which was amazing! I'd say it depends on your budget, but I managed the following in the long weekend:

Empire State
Statue of Liberty/Boat to Ellis Island
Manhattan
Central Park
Museum (movie came out after and it was great to have been there)
Broadway Show (Phantom)
Big stores and shopping streets
Brooklyn Bridge

..........loads more!!

Walked most places, as it was just as quick and I could gawp as I walked!! Yellow cabs, steaming manhole covers, rumble of the subway beneath your feet, hotdog/chestnut sellers, big trucks - it was just like all the movies!!

Mr. Green

Big kid!!

I'm there for about a week so I'm hoping to do all the things like Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, Ground Zero etc.

Got a HD video camera to take with me too. Very Happy

For some reason I really want to go to the Central Park Zoo (because of Madagascar Razz) and the Toys 'R Us there. Laughing

I went there for a week.

It was shit overall, and you couldn't pay me to go back.

The highlights were Empire State Building at night a week before christmas with a light blanket of snow across the city and it all lit up, that was fantastic.

Ground Zero was interesting too, if for nothing more than the fact that as soon as you get there, New York turns the volume down. Seriously, the rest of the place is all noise, hustle and bustle, but as soon as you get to ground zero every one turns it down a notch

But other than that it was shit and boring. Ok, I went with my parents, and I was only 19 so couldn't go out drinking, but I spend a lot of town wondering around on my own whilst my folks did their thing, and I feel drinking would have only been something to do to pass the time and alleviate the boredom.

At the end of the day, it's a city, so if you have ever been to any large city centre in the world, just multiply it by 5, and you have New York.

Typically, you're week will go:

Day 1 - Woo hoo! New York! Excellent. Walk around, get your bearings, make a list of places you wanna go/see.
Day 2 - Shopping ala macys/bloomingdales etc etc
Day 3 - Go empire state/statue of liberty, take photos. Some shopping
Day 4 - Go ground zero. Slot of a bit of shopping in since theres fuck all else to do.
Day 5 - wonder round shops for the sake of it because you are counting the hours till you go home by now, maybe by something, but to be honest you are sick of shopping, hell you don't even like it when you are back home let alone when you're in a bigger city on the other side of the world.
Day 6 - Start thinking that attempting to buy a loaded automatic and unloading clips into macys and bloomindales whilst screaming "I fucking hate shopping" might not be such a bad idea.
Day 7 - Head to airport, but finish off that last bit of shopping on the way Laughing

Seriously though, I was completely unimpressed with it, there was little of interest there that I couldn't see or do at home, but then maybe that's just me.

Oh I almost forgot, the pancakes........now those I could go back for...... simply gorgeous.

There's a network of places you can ride bike called Eaglerider. They're quite expensive, but it's an experience. The focus is on Harleys, you can also rent bikes from Harley dealers which seems to cost about the same.

As with anywhere in America, I highly recommend getting out into small town America for at least a couple of days. A city is a city, and European ones tend to be better than US ones. Small town America is different.

Have suitcase space, dollars are pounds so stuff is cheap, wal-mart sell everything.

Find a pawn shop, it'll have a shooting range out back where you can fire lots of guns for not much money.

Usually Americans are friendly and hospitable, but New Yorkers have a reputation for being abrupt. Expect bellboys, waitresses and anyone else on minimum wage hanging around for a tip, tourist prices in tourist places, and bland food.

Don't visit the ghetto in any city. Over here we have chavs and wannabe rudeboys, over there they have actual gangsters in the 50cent mold, complete with guns, crack, and stupidity. When I was down in Louisiana seeing a lady a couple of years ago we were pulled over by the police because we were two white people driving in the ghetto at dusk. They told us the quickest way out, and followed us to make sure we got out alive. This wasn't out of kindness, this was being white in the ghetto at night meant you would get killed.

Rolling Eyes Like he's going to visit a ghetto on a trip to new yoik. And how can you compare your experience in some deep-south shit-hole to a cosmopolitan city like New York just because they're in the same country?

Central Park is frickin awesome.

Bars are good in the US - make sure you drink spirits as the measures are huuuuge.

Empire State is ok, rest is just a bit pump.

Apart from the Park.

I loved the Park - stopped and had lunch at the Boathouse. The hotel I stayed at did it's own Martini Cocktail which was absolutely delicious and completely knockout - two of those and I was pretty giddy!! Embarassed

I could quite easily have grabbed a coffee in a cafe or a cocktail in a bar and sat and people watched for hours - fascinating place, as it's so busy!!

I went on the open top tourist bus tours, spent most of one day doing the bus tours, from there I could see the places I wanted to go back to...and made a note of them. It was an excellent way to see the city.

I then did Ellis Island / Statue of Liberty etc. in one day.
Empire State / Time Square etc. round the shops, and mooched about. Saw the bridges, and walked down the west side along the waters edge. China Town and all other bits inbetween.

I'm a bit like Tonka in that I'm a country girl at heart, and big cities are not really my thang. But I really like NY, as I also liked Hong Kong & Kowloon.

I thought that my four days were not long enough. Next time I go, I will make sure my mate is home and not away on holiday, so I can have rent free accommodation!

Worked there for 6 months about 4 years ago so heres some of my suggestions (some of it might be a bit old).

Met Museum is about half up in the right hand side of central park. Natural History museum on the left of it. If you wanna visit toy stores you have toys r us in times square and also fao schwarz on 5th avenue (bottom right corner of Central park) thats cool as its the toy shop from the movie Big. Round that area you also have the rochefeller centre and the big st patricks cathedral. Chinatown and Little Italy are worth a visit although not much of little italy is left as chinatown has literally taken over it. Soho area is cool if you like artsy/trendy stuff. Lots of little galleries, coffe shops and bars etc. Theres also the MOMA which is an awesome building. Shopping, you've got the stupidly big shopping departments Macy's and Bloomingdales.

New york pizza is awesome, hotdogs and donuts of street vendors. Infact the amount and variety of places to eat is pretty insane. You literally see something different if you have a wander and some weird cross over places (vietnamese/spanish food anyone?). If you like japanese food theres a restuarant near St Marks Place called Nori which is ace.

Quickest way around is via the subway. I think you can get a week ticket or journeys are around 2 dollars a pop no matter how far you go on manhattan. If you are flying into JFK a cab to manhattan costs a fixed rate of about 55dollars but i think its about 5-10 dollars via the subway. Walking around at night I actually felt safer there than anywhere in the UK. Even at 4am in the morning theres still loads of people about, traffic is pretty much there through the night (its called the city that never sleeps for a reason). And instead of queuing up for a kebab after a night out its the pizza shops. All in all i felt i was wandering round the biggest film set in the world. You'll see so many places you'll recognise.

Riding in manhattan looks dangerous btw. The traffic is mad and theres a reason why all the cars have really shit sloppy suspension as the roads are actually pretty crap! Oh yeah and they have jaywalking laws there which i think is a fine if you get caught.

I estimate that 150% of UK citizens have been to New York. We are not all the same. Tripadvisor has always served me well. Find people in your age group with your interests, and read their reviews.

To add to the list, I have been twice in as many years. First time only had 2 days and loved it, decided I needed longer and vowed to go back. Second time, 5 days, rubbish.
