Hey all,
I'm off to New York in a couple of weeks. Anyone been there before?
Anyone got any tips of where to go, what to do?
I'm staying on Broadway so should be within walking distances of most places.
Any good motorcycle shops? Clothing etc....
Cheers. ____________________ MKGaming.com

watch out for low flying aircraft
depends on what you want to do really.
you can get various passes for the busses that do the tourist rounds which is a pretty good way of covering most of the main sites.
didn't see any bike shops as was mainly doing the tourist bit. ____________________ (L)users...Disk space is to good for them.

Lucky You!!
I'm about as 'not a city person' as a person could be, but I loved NY - went for a zero birthday and it was fab! Stayed in Time Square which was amazing! I'd say it depends on your budget, but I managed the following in the long weekend:
Empire State
Statue of Liberty/Boat to Ellis Island
Manhattan
Central Park
Museum (movie came out after and it was great to have been there)
Broadway Show (Phantom)
Big stores and shopping streets
Brooklyn Bridge
..........loads more!!
Walked most places, as it was just as quick and I could gawp as I walked!! Yellow cabs, steaming manhole covers, rumble of the subway beneath your feet, hotdog/chestnut sellers, big trucks - it was just like all the movies!!

I'm there for about a week so I'm hoping to do all the things like Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, Ground Zero etc.
Got a HD video camera to take with me too.
For some reason I really want to go to the Central Park Zoo (because of Madagascar ) and the Toys 'R Us there. ____________________ MKGaming.com

I went there for a week.
It was shit overall, and you couldn't pay me to go back.
The highlights were Empire State Building at night a week before christmas with a light blanket of snow across the city and it all lit up, that was fantastic.
Ground Zero was interesting too, if for nothing more than the fact that as soon as you get there, New York turns the volume down. Seriously, the rest of the place is all noise, hustle and bustle, but as soon as you get to ground zero every one turns it down a notch
But other than that it was shit and boring. Ok, I went with my parents, and I was only 19 so couldn't go out drinking, but I spend a lot of town wondering around on my own whilst my folks did their thing, and I feel drinking would have only been something to do to pass the time and alleviate the boredom.
At the end of the day, it's a city, so if you have ever been to any large city centre in the world, just multiply it by 5, and you have New York.
Typically, you're week will go:
Day 1 - Woo hoo! New York! Excellent. Walk around, get your bearings, make a list of places you wanna go/see.
Day 2 - Shopping ala macys/bloomingdales etc etc
Day 3 - Go empire state/statue of liberty, take photos. Some shopping
Day 4 - Go ground zero. Slot of a bit of shopping in since theres fuck all else to do.
Day 5 - wonder round shops for the sake of it because you are counting the hours till you go home by now, maybe by something, but to be honest you are sick of shopping, hell you don't even like it when you are back home let alone when you're in a bigger city on the other side of the world.
Day 6 - Start thinking that attempting to buy a loaded automatic and unloading clips into macys and bloomindales whilst screaming "I fucking hate shopping" might not be such a bad idea.
Day 7 - Head to airport, but finish off that last bit of shopping on the way
Seriously though, I was completely unimpressed with it, there was little of interest there that I couldn't see or do at home, but then maybe that's just me.
Oh I almost forgot, the pancakes........now those I could go back for...... simply gorgeous.

There's a network of places you can ride bike called Eaglerider. They're quite expensive, but it's an experience. The focus is on Harleys, you can also rent bikes from Harley dealers which seems to cost about the same.
As with anywhere in America, I highly recommend getting out into small town America for at least a couple of days. A city is a city, and European ones tend to be better than US ones. Small town America is different.
Have suitcase space, dollars are pounds so stuff is cheap, wal-mart sell everything.
Find a pawn shop, it'll have a shooting range out back where you can fire lots of guns for not much money.
Usually Americans are friendly and hospitable, but New Yorkers have a reputation for being abrupt. Expect bellboys, waitresses and anyone else on minimum wage hanging around for a tip, tourist prices in tourist places, and bland food.
Don't visit the ghetto in any city. Over here we have chavs and wannabe rudeboys, over there they have actual gangsters in the 50cent mold, complete with guns, crack, and stupidity. When I was down in Louisiana seeing a lady a couple of years ago we were pulled over by the police because we were two white people driving in the ghetto at dusk. They told us the quickest way out, and followed us to make sure we got out alive. This wasn't out of kindness, this was being white in the ghetto at night meant you would get killed. |

Like he's going to visit a ghetto on a trip to new yoik. And how can you compare your experience in some deep-south shit-hole to a cosmopolitan city like New York just because they're in the same country? |
Because of Harlem, Queensbridge, Yonkers, The Bronx, etc etc

I went on the open top tourist bus tours, spent most of one day doing the bus tours, from there I could see the places I wanted to go back to...and made a note of them. It was an excellent way to see the city.
I then did Ellis Island / Statue of Liberty etc. in one day.
Empire State / Time Square etc. round the shops, and mooched about. Saw the bridges, and walked down the west side along the waters edge. China Town and all other bits inbetween.
I'm a bit like Tonka in that I'm a country girl at heart, and big cities are not really my thang. But I really like NY, as I also liked Hong Kong & Kowloon.
I thought that my four days were not long enough. Next time I go, I will make sure my mate is home and not away on holiday, so I can have rent free accommodation! ____________________ Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter won't mind - Dr. Seuss |
