Good post joormotha, even if a decidedly odd screen name
Just a word of advice though, to anyone intending to found a patch wearing club in the UK, and that's check out your local area. Clubs who wear colours/patches can quite often be rather territorial. It's all rather silly but I have seen a few rucks start due to people wearing patches in the wrong areas. Call me a twat if you like, but this is simply intended as a friendly warning. ____________________ I'm immortal. Well, so far. |

No, not quite. However, the attempt to 'recruit' members for the UK arm of the club from BCF is fatally flawed, hence the reaction.
There are cultural differences between Americans and us Brits. Whilst we all part of BCF we don't neccesarily feel we have to 'belong' to it like a fraternity, which is instilled in American culture. We dip in, dip out, go on rideouts (or not), meet other members (hey, even recruit them!!), but the idea that we have to part of a 'firm' or 'gang' or we are 'homey's' is an anathema to us.
Equally the way the Mayhem Street riders to get members of BCF to join is a bit hamfisted. It would appear the gang in the US started with a load of mates with bikes getting together and going from there. That's the way to do it here and not go to popular interest-led forums and offer stickers.
I wish you luck with your recruitment drive, and thanks, but no thanks ____________________ Using a mobile phone while driving a car should be made a capital offence! |

Ok, maybe I haven't expressed myself clearly. Mayhem is not a gang. The whole "gang" thing is just a bad choice of words on Dynamite's part.
Ste wrote: | I wish you luck with starting out your gang thing, but the best way to go about it is not to go around existing communities and start trying to persuade people to come and join your gang. |
We're not persuading, just inviting.
Ste wrote: | So basically you're saying it is a community of friends. That means you're going around asking people if they will be your friends. |
No, by being a member of the club you have the power of getting enough heads together to organize events such as group rides, BBQ's, bike washes, stunt shows, etc. You also have the ability to ask for sposorship and discounts from local shops. You have people around you that will be willing to help out when you crash your bike. The element of fraternity comes naturally. I find that being a member on a non-club type of forum, people are not as helpful. You may get a lot of good information, but trying to find someone to help wrenching on your bike is a lot harder. Perhaps the way things are on your side of the Atlantic are different.
Ste wrote: | You will find if you go along to local bike places you'll find people there who are friendly, although when you start asking them to join your gang and to buy stickers to put on their bikes you might suddenly find they no longer are interested in knowing you. |
The point of Mayhem is not to have anything mandatory. Our meetings are "highly encouraged" but you don't get booted even if you don't show up for months. There are no dues, everything is donation based. The reality is that you have to pay up if you want something, but you get to choose what your money goes towards to. You don't have to have a large sticker on your windscreen. My bike has ones on the bike's tail and helmet.
The only reason why I'm even bothering to post here, is because of the misconceptions about our club. Not trying to convince anybody to join, just don't want people making ill informed statements about us. The last thing I want is people portaying me and my friends as gangsters. Perhaps all of this is truly getting "lost in translation" |

Don't worry about it dude, some people get very possessive about what they perceive as people coming and trying to 'steal' members.
The majority of us aren't bothered, and most of the comments should be taken with a pinch of salt.

In some sense of the word we are a "gang" here at BCF. The words gang and group both describe people from one place going somewhere to do something as a collective (in fact, writing that sentence without using one of those words is difficult!).
In all honesty, if you read all of the posts, some of the BCF members very guilty of acting like a "gang". Some of the posts are very territorial - I actually see it quite a lot, particularly when it comes to Americans....
As for my opinion - the word "gang" does bring some negatives with it, and having a sticker on your bike doesn't always go down well in good old blighty (I'm guessing if Mayhem did take off it would be a good way for Mr Plod to pull you over and do you for every fault he could find).
Anyways, this is my
Bottom line is that we all like it here at BCF, I guess people want it to stay like that and therefore get protective... |

yeah, I hear ya. I don't think being a Mayhem and BFC member are mutually exclusive. Personally, I'm a member on SoCalSportbikes.com, R6Messagenet.com, CBRWorld.net, and a buch of other forums where I post on a regular basis. I ride with a lot of people from SoCalSportbikes. No one is trying to steal members from this board

Ya'll just hate us American's. Is it because we have shitty beer?
But seriously, I understand how europeans feel about all things "American." I lived in Poland for 8 years, so I've seen things from the other side of the Atlantic. I guess we're not really promoting an entity, but an idea. This doesn't conflict with other commitments that people have. |

And to finalize this thread... If you didn't want to join Mayhem, you didn't have to click on the link. Simple really? I'm sure people come online to look at more websites then just BCF though.

I do agree i maybe shouldn't have used the word gang but if you look in the dictionary the word gang can mean "A group of people who associate regularly on a social basis"
i wasn't trying to steal people only looking for people ideally local to me to ride with as its more fun as a group and i never said you had to buy a sticker i was just getting all the facts out in the open.
so if you fancy it get in touch with me,if you don't why bother posting
so lets leave it at that!
Matt
oh yeah cheers you the USA Mayhem for posting support. |

If you remember HYB was formed from BCF . They're just another bunch of lads brought together by their love of motorcycling - amongst other things .
PS: No i'm not very active there anymore
At the end of the day, the more organised motorcycle groups can only be a good thing for reasons that I understand but can't put into words. Something about strength of numbers etc.. ____________________ https://www.bikepics.com/members/nsrandy/96rs250/ My Bike!

All in all, I think that any bike club that supports biking and bikers alike is a good idea. Just be careful with the way you use the word gang!
As for meeting up in California, thanks for the invite - it must be nice not to have to worry about rain!
All the best

I actually read Mayhem's post more as a friendly invite rather than a "come fight us" type, sorry Acid.
They certainly appear to be a good group of guys, and I wish the UK members the best of luck.
As Mayhem said, get out there, ride, enjoy life, quit bickering. If you don't want to join them, then don't bother commenting.
