its really depressing, iv'e had my licence 2 years now, im 18. had cbr125 then a drz 400 - but for some reason i always had it in my head that riding a bike was cheaper than driving a car.

now i think iv'e been wrong, new tires every 5k miles, regular oil changes, a few "accidents" Laughing

I'd love to get a Gixxer 600 or something similar but insurance is almost 2k!, now i think i would of been better off following my mates and getting a corsa or 106 Confused

guess thats how it goes...

its all too good for you old F***kers! Wink

not sure of exactly when, but was amazed that to be insured on a tdm 850 tpft was only £260 for me at 25 with just a provisional and no NCB

so maybe the age really does make that much difference?

You say 'accidents' - have they led to any claims?

I'm annoyed as my insurance has gone up this year - I suppose it's because I added another bike to the policy and had a claim (in a van) against me.

£200 fully comp for both the bikes - highway robbery! Wink

That sounds way to high for insurance on a 600 at 18 compared to what others on here seem to pay.

All the best

I'm posting this from my phone as I'm stuck working away so please forgive any poor formatting.

It's true that age is a major factor in insurance which actually means that the slower your reactions and the more worn out you are the better risk you are . This seems daft as experience does not equate to
Skill or reduced chance of mistake automatically or even actuarially

there are though greater imperatives for risk taking in the young in any society and I suppose this accounts for the greater showing of younger riders/drivers in accidents as a group but not necessarily mean that an individual is a higher risk per se

I am 45 and my 2 litre Nissan is £99 fully comp and my 600 divvy is £58 fully comp and I generally ride and drive like a mad max extra so
I guess there is room for changing the way insurance is approached

20 (reading other peoples ages makes me feel old), 4 years NCB, hornet 250, 0 points, protected NCB, fully comp, £158 Very Happy

I think where you live, and if it is garaged effects it a lot. Changing my insurance to my student house in Leeds triples my insurance. And when it was £200 that was quite a lot different.

I got my car and bike licences at relatively late ages (mid twenties) due to previously mostly getting about by bicycle so my experience is a bit different to most.

When I started on my first bike (a 500) it cost about £400 TPFT compared to about £250 TPFT for the car I had at the time.

That decreased rapidly, three years after getting bike licence f for it was about £250 TPFT per annum for that 500. Now about £150 FC a year, and I currently have two bikes a 500 and a little 100, and no car of my own to insure !

I think a lot of it comes to avoiding mishaps - if you don't hit anything and nothing hits you, your premiums should favour you as you gain experience - so ride safely

21,1 year NCB, CBR600 £308 TPFT - that's with European cover and allows me to ride other bikes. I was quite pleased with that Smile

My car on the other hand is £65 p/m with 2 years no claims Sad

Although insurance on a 600 sports is quite hefty for me Sad

I'm 19 with three years no claims, last year I could insure any of the sport 6's (going mid to late 90's - SRADs and such) for 250 or under.

An R1 is about a grand but barring litre sports it is all under 400 quid pretty much.

I found that my first years NCB made the biggest difference tbh.

traders policy?

Why?

They could be cheap bikes or any reason. Like a good deal.

21, 4 years NCB, GT550, £130 FC, TPO on other bikes.

Could get insured on my Hornet and the NC30 FC for 280 with TPO to ride other bikes...

2K insurance for a Gixxer 6? ouch.

To set it straight i insure: '98 VFR800, '04 KTM EXC 525, '53 BSA A10, '45 Norton ES2, '27 BSA Roundtank. The three being classics don't add much, mainly pay for the VFR.
